Was Odysseus a Hero? The Odyssey is a story of a Greek hero’s journey home from war. He and his crew set sail from Troy to get home to Ithaca. They have many setbacks on their journey and in the end he loses all of his men. Odysseus has to get home in time before his wife marries another man. After 20 years he finally makes it home to his wife and they live a happy life. Odysseus, in most cases can be described as a hero. Odysseus is a hero because he is smart and thinks things through. He saves them from The Lotus plants, the Cyclops, The Laestrygonians, Circe the witch, and then from the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis. This shows Odysseus's Heroicness because of saving his crew, maybe not all but he’s only human and he tried his best. “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches” (Homer 1046). This shows that he’s heroic because he goes out of his way just to save three of his crew members. This makes it clear that Odysseus, although a little flawed, is a hero, because he goes out of his way just to save his crew and gets nothing in return. People describe them as brave, daring, and trustworthy. This is not how I would describe Odysseus from the book The Odyssey by Homer, everyone always thought of Odysseus as the “hero” of the story, but he was quite the opposite.
