But I would not listen, though it would have been better, wishing to see the giant himself, and test his hospitality". This quote is reworded a tad bit, so you can understand the full meaning of what Odysseus meant in this saying. Sadly, this choice resulted in six of his men dying. In addition, in Odyssey of book ten, Odysseus does not communicate with his men about the contents of the bag he receives from Aeolus. Odysseus falls asleep, his men become curious, open the bag just when their ship was in sight of their homeland, and then they are blown back to Aeolus' land.
Odysseus says, “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows / gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops / as more than natural force nerved them; straight / forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it / deep in his crater eye, and I leaned on it / turning it as a shipwright turns a drill / in planking, having men below to swing / the two-handled strap that spins it in the groove” (Homer 479). Another example of him being brave is when he faces the suitors. Odysseus says that the suitors will pay in blood for what they did to his property and wife. The fight begins and Odysseus and his men get support of Athena. Odysseus and his men show no mercy and kill all the suitors.
For instance, he left his men in the dark; not knowing the truth about the cattle of the sun god, and how they would die if they ate them. Odysseus told them, “” (Homer !#), not revealing the reason; which divulges his inordinate arrogance. Odysseus didn’t show leadership nor self-control here, so why is he considered a hero -some might argue, but it’s inaccurate to judge people from their mistakes. Odysseus was called arrogant, but his real face is heroic; saving his army and winning the war for them. Whoever judged from Odysseus from his errors, was only focusing on the inadequate side; this idea was falsified numerous times.
Because of Odysseus’s sharp intellect, cunningness, and with the help from the gods, he finishes the heroes’ journey. Odysseus’s main flaw in The Odyssey is his pride and not being able to control his crew. Test, allies, and enemies happen when Odysseus blinds Polyphemus who is the son of Poseidon. When Odysseus and his crew first found Polyphemus’s cave they could’ve just stolen food or left but instead Odysseus wanted to stay and receive a gift. After his men and him escapes unnecessarily losing two men in the process, Odysseus taunts Polyphemus which leads to him saying “ Hear me Poseidon, sustainer of the earth, god of sable locks.
Is Odysseus a hero? The webster's dictionary definition of a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage or noble achievements.” Personally when I think of a hero I think of someone who sacrifices everything to help the people around them. Someone who is selfless, bold, and gallant. These are all examples of traits that Odysseus , the protagonist in Homer’s book The Odyssey does not posses. Odysseus is not a hero because he was stubborn, self absorbed, and ignorant towards other people's needs.
He shows his intelligence by telling the Cyclops a fake name that would benefit Odysseus and show how stupid the Cyclops was. He also showed intelligence by dressing up as a beggar and thinking ahead of the situation. He is a leader by leading his men to freedom from the Cyclops's cave and not letting the rest of his crew be tempted by the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus shows his acts of heroism and sacrifices to see his wife, son and rule
Odysseus is in between. Odysseus is a hero because he has saved many of his men from the Cyclops and tried to save as many as he can. In The Odyssey, the Cyclops was eating Odysseus men, Odysseus gave him a bunch of wine to drink and then got him drunk, later that night Odysseus stabbed him in the eye and the Cyclops went blind. This shows that Odysseus is a hero because if he never stabbed him or got him drunk, he would eat them all. Also in The Odyssey, after the Cyclops being stabbed in the eye, Odysseus and his men hid under sheep to escape the cave of the Cyclops.
Like the end of the video, Odysseus got kill by Cyclops’s father. Otherwise than both medias showed that Odysseus has strong intelligence, strategy, and leadership during the escape. Odysseus is the symbol of intelligent in the story. He considered more perfectly and thoughtful than his colleagues. Both text and video demon that Odysseus and his crews were going to landed on a secret island and find out the truth of it, but they accidentally got attract into a monster's cave and got beset with crisis.
He has done things that may be considered non heroic but for me he is heroic for being brave, courageous, and intelligent. Odysseus is considered a hero because of his bravery. An example is when he tricked the Cyclops by telling him his name was nobody and then hiding his men as sheep so that Polyphemus would let them out of his cave. Another example is how he kept his men together by earning their loyalty even when Scylla and circe tried to hurt them. Lasty he is brave when he tricks the suitors by stringing his bow.
In the book the Odyssey, we learn many things about Odysseus and his personality. We first find him held captive by Calypso. All of Odysseus’ crew has died but we are told it is not his fault. His failure to avoid temptation ensures his crew’s eventual death throughout the journey. Odysseus is a man of many great characteristics, but also has some faults that he learns from throughout the book.
