The question on some peoples mind are, is Odysseus a true hero? People should believe that Odysseus is not a hero. Based on story’s read, and evidence gathered, Odysseus is not a true hero. In The Odyssey Odysseus starts fights that shouldn’t even be started in the first place, he is not a very good strategist, and he also puts his men in danger and makes mistake after mistake. Odysseus has proven that he is not a true hero because he starts fights that shouldn’t even have been started. “We beached there, and I told the crew to stand by and keep watch over the ship, as myself I took my twelve best fighters and went ahead. I had a goat skin full of that sweet liquor…” (1114, 93-97). Odysseus was going to the Cyclopes expecting a fight to happen. …show more content…
“She ate them as they shrieked there, in her den, in the due die grapple reaching still for me- and deathly pity ran me through at that sight- far the worst I ever suffered, questioning the passes of the strange sea” (1136, 199-203). At first Odysseus was only going to lose 6 men going through Scylla. But since he wanting to fight Scylla and do it his way, Scylla ate another 6 of Odysseus men. So instead of losing 6 of his men he lost 12 of his men. Only a true hero tries to have less of him men killed. A true hero don’t only look out for himself, he looks out for everyone around him that’s on his side. So he should be looking out for his crew members. And he has not did that because at the end of his journey all of him men dies.
Penelope thinks that Odysseus is a true hero. Yeah he might have got his men out of the bad situation. But someone had to get them in the situation, and that was Odysseus. Odysseus has put them in every bad situation they have been in through the whole journey. Yeah he tried to get his wife back, so that means he is fighting for something. But does he really love her? He was unfaithful to Penelope two times. A true hero is not unfaithful twice. Plus think about it a hero doesn’t make the same mistake
When he told his men on his ship to start rowing away, they were so shocked and in dismay that they lost most of their comrades because of that, they had no words. This shows that Odysseus is not a hero. A hero is someone who puts the safety of others first yet Odysseus failed to do this countless times and did not try to save even a single of his soldiers from the
Just like in the story of the cyclops, he put his men first to put them to safety. He isn't greedy and looks out for others. He did everything he could to ensure that they would all get off the island safely. Even if some of Odysseus's men were unlucky enough to get eaten, Odysseus still felt sorrow for them. A hero is one to care for others and not himself.
To be a hero, you must show helpful and important qualities, but that does not mean all heroes are perfect and do not make mistakes. Odysseus is an example of a hero who is perfect in no way, but in the end, he completes his tasks and heroically leads the hero’s journey. Odysseus led his crew through difficult journeys which caused conflict and hardship, but it only helped them grow and become closer to their final destination. In Homer’s epic poem
Heroes are often thought of as very powerful and superhuman, but would someone be a hero if they led many men to their deaths? In the many parts of the story “The Odyssey” By Homer, Odysseus shows unheroic characteristics in several of his actions. Odysseus is the leader of Ithaca and he must go on a 20-year journey to arrive back home after fighting in the Trojan war. Odysseus and his men get stuck at several places for several years which elongates the journey. Odysseus is not a hero because he does several things to get his men hurt to help himself get home.
Odysseus is not a hero because he stabs Polyphemus in the eye and blinds him. Odysseus is still a hero because he is a leader. Moreover, after Odysseus and his men fight the Cicones, he orders ¨Back and Quickly! Out to sea again!” (Homer 984).
Odysseus was the hero, he could do no wrong. But some of the decisions he made and actions he took that made him a hero to all, would bring him all the wrong kinds of fame in our society today. After winning the Trojan War, Odysseus and his men ransacked the Ciccone's island of Ismarus. They “killed the men” and dragged “the wives and plunder” away (Homer 212). This kind of disregard and blatant disrespect for other people would make Odysseus the opposite of a hero today, he and his men would be the kind of people that parents pray their children don’t turn into.
Even though Odysseus was disloyal, Penelope stayed loyal to him despite the fact that she thought he was dead. Odysseus was disloyal to his wife and that shows that he is not a good
It is clear that Odysseus is not a hero through his terrible leadership. In conclusion, Odysseus is not a hero because of his impulsive decisions, his hubris, and terrible leadership. He does not plan ahead, he is not humble and a sore loser, and he strays away from telling important things to his men. Though in Greek society Odysseus is seen as a hero, he can not be called one now.
(9.145-293) Book nine shows Odysseus becoming overwhelmed by the situations he gets his men and himself into because of his curiosity or boastfulness. While trapped, he watches six men eaten by the Cyclops and is told that the gift that Polyphemus will give him is to eat him last. Despite this information and gruesome sights he keeps a cool head and strategizes a way to outsmart the cyclops, defeating his brawn with brains. Odysseus, while attempting to sail home to Ithaca, is forced to make a decision to sail through rocks that could sink his ship or choose to sail by one of two monsters, either Scylla or Charybdis.
He got his crew killed by staying in the cyclops cave, getting eaten by the cyclops. Odysseus destroyed his own men because Odysseus lied about Scylla and not thinking when they were on the cyclops island. When Circe told Odysseus about Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus did not tell his crew about how some crew members are going to die. When Scylla appeared, taking Odysseus's six of his best men, Odysseus did noting when his crew was getting captured.
Fourth reason, in the beginning of the book, Homer wrote, “he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home” (Homer 5). But what good is Odysseus saving himself for when in the end he couldn't even control his members in the end. That's why he shouldn't have recklessly sacrificed so many of his members and had a big ego. When Odysseus went back home, he saw that his son and his wife were not safe, so he killed the man’s who were trying to win Penelope heart to gain power. Penelope was so happy that he was back, but really, if Odysseus never left, Penelope and his son would've never be in danger in the first place, that's why he is not a hero.
Odysseus: A Hero The classic and epic story of Odysseus and his travels, titled The Odyssey, has touched humankind since it was first told in the eighth century. Over this time, people have debated endlessly about whether or not the main character could be classified as a typical hero. Odysseus did some things that could make him seem dishonest or unethical, but does that disqualify him from being a hero? Overall, the narrative portrays a character this is not inherently flawless, but he is an inspiration, as well as someone who can persevere through challenges, and is simply trying to do what is best for everyone, therefore embodying a quintessential hero.
What would it feel like to have the whole world targeting you? What would it be like when it took you 20 years to get back to your home? I doubt you’d know. Unless you’re Koro Sensei (a yellow, octopus-like creature who can fly at mach 20 and plans to destroy the Earth in less than a year’s time, and trains a class of 27 students to try and assassinate him) or Odysseus (goes to fight the Trojan war for 10 years and due to bad luck and misfortune, and the [very angry] sea god Poseidon, it takes another 10 years to voyage home). It is true that Odysseus is a hero because he is brave, powerful and smart, but he does these things in a selfish way.
While they may have a point, they do not take into account the fact that he did not use his brain when approaching this challenge. He had been prideful on this part of his journey. To conclude, Odysseus was a hero. He was a hero when he used his brains to ponder about and reach the answer to a predicament. Heros are the people who complete tasks that they are afraid to complete, but they do
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
