The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini. After Louie’s plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, he and two other survivors had to overcome a series of conflicts before they could make it to safety. Throughout Laura Hillenbrand's book, "Unbroken", Louie’s most important characteristic of resilience that contributed to his survival was his awareness. With his awareness of his surroundings and situation, Louie was able to overcome the conflicts he faced such as shark attacks, dehydration, and starvation.

Doe Zantamata, an American author, once said, “Good friends help you find the most important things when you have lost them...your smile, your hope, and your courage.” In Frank Darabont’s film The Shawshank Redemption, hope and friendship are a large part of the characters’ lives, as they are inmates in the Shawshank prison. Andy is a newcomer and intrigues Red, an inmate who has been in the prison for a long time. Although Red is not sure what to think of him at first, they soon become good friends. Someone’s identity not only shapes that individual, but also the friendships one makes. With time, the scenes became brighter, slowly and gradually throughout Andy’s stay at Shawshank. Andy brought hope to the prison and we began seeing and feeling this throughout the film with the use of lighting. In these times of struggle, we often look up into the light for small glimmers of hope that helps motivates us to push forwards. While we struggle, hope has always been by our side. In Stephen King’s novella, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, and its film adaptation, directed by Frank Darabont, The Shawshank Redemption, the theme of hope is perpetuated through Red’s character. It tells a life story about Andy Dufresne, a life sentenced convict who proclaims his innocence, who is sent to Shawshank prison. As he slowly integrates with prison life, he meets another man called Ellis, also known as Red, who he gradually becomes best friends with.

The main theme of the film is the power of hope. Hope, more than anything else, drives the inmates and gives them the will to live. Work is the main factor of stress in life. With this, comes perseverance and working hard. However, in the novel Call of the Wild, the main character Buck worked arduously to reach a certain goal in the end of his suffering. He did this all with no home, shelter, or provided food. In life, my mother has also persevered with many bosses who did not treat her the way she deserved. In contrast to Buck, my mother had to pay for food and school. They both worked equally as long and hard. One with provided food, one without. In comparison to Buck my mother worked strenuously to reach her goal, knowing it would pay off for them later in life. For Buck, this was being reunited with Judge Miller or just a presence of love and care, for my mother it was being able to influence the lives of the next generation.
