Prejudice is when a person has a pre-determined opinion about someone or something despite not having an actual reason to think that way. We see multiple examples of prejudice and racism in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. For example, when Tom Robinson is accused of raping and beating Mayella, the majority of the county is quick to immediately assume he had to have done it specifically because he was black. Many people were so consumed with the stereotypes surrounding black people at the time that many important details were unknown until the trial nobody knew he was crippled until he went up to testify. We learn that Mayella had a bruise on the right side of her face, and even when it was proven highly unlikely he would’ve been able to harm her …show more content…
But while that is true, it is ultimately an outdated book and therefore should not be required reading. The book is commonly used to teach students about racism and injustices in the world, but the book itself took place in the 1930s and was written in the 1960s. It is extremely outdated and doesn’t properly depict what racism looks like in our day and age. The book shows students a very blunt example of racism, when in reality, in this day and age, racism is a deeper and more complex issue. It isn’t a matter of just hating someone because of how they look, but a more internalized issue commonly built off of microaggressions that someone might not even know is a microaggression. The book is also told and written from the perspective of a white person, someone who especially at the time wouldn’t be able to speak about how racism affects people. It is good to teach these things to children to prevent hate, but there are a number of other books written by and narrated by people of color that could be used to more accurately explain how racism affects others. Because of this, despite the book being a good piece of literature, it shouldn’t be used to discuss racism in the …show more content…
Mockingbirds are birds that don’t harm or disturb anybody and they’re known for singing beautiful songs, which is why is it considered a sin to kill them. The author gives the birds meaning by using them to describe innocent characters like Tom Robinson and Boo Radley, and how they didn’t deserve the things that were done to them. Boo Radley was the subject of many rumors and stories in which he was usually depicted as a monster when in reality he was forced to be a recluse because of something he did as a child. While Tom Robinson was accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell, despite him being a polite man simply trying to work to support his family. During his trial it was even proven that it would be highly unlikely he would’ve been able to harm her due to his crippled arm, and yet he was instantly witch-hunted simply because of his race, and the stereotypes surrounding his race at the
It has very complex and touchy subjects in the story for example the book talks about rape and racism. It's not always easy for teachers to talk about it in schools because of the language used in the text. For some students the words used and actions said in the book are hard to hear and can make them uncomfortable. The book also does not explain the n-word is a derogatory word. How black characters are shown in the book is hurtful to black students' image of themselves and they can feel if it's pointed towards them.
So I do like the book because of the morality development fact, the overflow of racial comments and actions outweigh the educational value of the morality development. I do not think this book should be taught in today 's school system and i think we need to move on to better
I think that one of the main points was that “the Age of Colorblindness”. This current time period is supposed to be post racial and the new generations much more accepting. The book proves that racism is not over, and it is just now carried out in a new way. Black men are the group that are most affected by the prison system and are more likely to be stopped by the police than any other group of
High schools that refuse to teach this book because of the n word are losing a perfect teachable moment. It is an opportunity to teach about how blacks were treated in the past and how that word came along. Back then for whites, it was just what white people called black people. Nowadays it is not okay to call people that, but high school students should be able to read about it and not throw a fit. Most students are already aware of the n word so reading a book that uses it should not be a problem.
Rosa Parks once said, “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome”. Many instances within the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” relate to the topic of racism and how it is introduced to children. During the Great Depression, there was an excess amount of stigma that people of color were inferior to white people. This racism in the time period seems to have inspired Harper Lee to write a novel which encompasses this topic.
I believe this book goes into deep discussions on how racism plays a big role in life no matter what it is. This book is also discussing about how President Obama has changed the Old Jim Crow and remodeled a new one. In result this book talks about the discrimination we still have in the world. The book has many points to read.
The book was very informative of life when racism was more apparent. I think that books like this show that standing up to racism is an option. It shows that even children of a younger age were involved in the situation.
I would recommend this book to all people with an age over ten, only because of the intensity and the language. One reason why I would recommend this book is because it makes you thankful for the way the United States of America is today. Fortunately, the inhumane mistreatment of dark skinned people is far behind us, and for decades now, blacks have been given the same opportunities as whites. I would also recommend this because it teaches history in the United States of America. I did not realize how bad the racial segregation was in the 1950s.
Prejudice is defined as judging someone based on personal bias without really knowing them. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are all kinds of prejudice shown through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. From her perspective, we get an insight into the prejudice she sees and faces. Prejudice has shown itself in many forms, including ageism, sexism, and racism; it has affected the way people view each other and has negatively affected their lives. Ageism is a type of prejudice that happens to both young and old people.
But after taking this class as representing race, I know the main concepts and themes behind the book and how they faced all things which are not appropriate for any kind of race or color. The videos we saw in class are full of violence and full of discriminative words that I can’t even imagine. I found that the purpose of the book isn't to give itemized techniques to "illuminate" this emergency, yet the narrator
Anyways the book exposes the true why most of historic events happened. The book illustrates show white men used intimidation to sexual victimize black women, instilled fear into black women’s hearts to not speak of the injustice done to them and enforced a hierarchy of white
Firstly, I believe it is reasonable to challenge this novel because it contains racial slurs. If students read them in a book, they may think that it is okay to use them as a result, so it is best to limit exposure to them. Also, this creates an issue for students who are reading the book aloud to a classroom, because others could be offended by the language. On the other hand, that is a part of American history, and the topic shouldn’t be completely avoided. A solution to this problem could be crossing out the slurs with permanent marker, so students won’t be reading them over and over
In today’s world, Prejudice is still at large and people don’t even notice it. Prejudice falls under many categories of racism, sexism, and ageism. Harper Lee uses the idea of prejudice when writing To kill a Mockingbird to bring awareness to it. In To kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents the idea that Prejudice and how judging and treating people unfairly because of their skin color or social status can hurt them and cause problems in society. For example, the townspeople in Maycomb unjustly accused Tom Robinson of a crime simply because he was black, despite evidence to the contrary, which ultimately led to his tragic fate, demonstrating the harmful consequences of prejudice.
The book was challenged by a middle school in Brentwood, Tennessee in 2006 because the book contains “profanity” and “contains adult themes such as rape and incest.” The complaints also say that the book promotes “racial hatred, racial division, racial separation, and promotes white supremacy.” The people that say that are people that are trying to ‘protect’ other people from knowing and understanding what happened in the past because they believe that if they do know and understand what happened in the past then they will become racist and believe in white supremacy. These kinds of people are like the Holocaust deniers who believe that six million Jews where not murdered despite all of the evidence against that. George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are bound to repeat it.”
In this case, it teaches students about racism, how it’s still a part of society today, and how it’s so deeply rooted in our country’s history. It’s necessary to talk to our students about slavery’s roots in the United States and how recent African-Americans only got their equal rights and treatment with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Act of 1965. John Schwetman, an assistant professor teaching American literature at the University of Minnesota Duluth, explained about a “conversation about literature… acknowledging changing reading tastes, changing values, changing concerns of readers.” (Louwagie) Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird, wrote of her experience with racism in mind. It teaches the importance of morality and resonates with the white students.
