Throughout the story of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout Finch and her brother, Jem, encounter the many trials of living in the small county of Maycomb, Alabama. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The people involved in the trial are Bob and Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Atticus Finch, who is defending Tom. In the trial, Bob Ewell tries to get revenge on Atticus and his family. Bob is called to testify, this reveals Bob’s true character. We learn that Bob Ewell drinks, he leaves his family for numerous days at a time, he also can get violent, and he may even be the perpetrator of raping Mayella.
Throughout these five chapters surrounding Tom Robinson’s trial, it is apparent that the characters are victims of prejudice due to Maycomb’s race relations. Harper Lee introduces three characters that drives the main plot of To Kill a Mockingbird: Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and Bob Ewell. Atticus Finch and Homer Gilmer pursued questions regarding the witnesses’ lives that are relevant to what occurred during the said incident. The questioning covered important points such as Bob Ewell being left-handed, Mayella’s inconclusive testimonies, and Tom Robinson’s reason for running away. Some elements observed in To Kill A Mockingbird were characters, tone, and setting. These elements helped the reader connect to the book in a special way and give understanding.

In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, prejudice is portrayed in many ways. Three characters that experience prejudice is Boo Radley, Atticus Finch, and Tom Robinson. Boo Radley is not treated like he fits into the town, Atticus Finch is being judged because he is presenting a black person in court, and Tom Robinson experiences prejudice because he is black. The people in Maycomb think Boo Radley is different, so they treat him like he does not belong in the town. The citizens in Maycomb think that Boo’s actions are not normal.
Prejudice is preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. So how would that be represented in the book to kill a mockingbird? Well the main character Scout learns about different types of prejudice that are illustrated by the actions of the towns people towards Boo Radley, the Ewells and Tom Robinson. Scout learns that they way Dyl, Jem, and herself look at and judge Boo Radley is very prejudice because they do not know how Boo Radley really is.

In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows the effects prejudice has on certain characters as it distorts the town's view of who they really are. This claim can be supported by examining the characters: Arthur Radley, Dolphus Raymond and Tom Robinson. Arthur Radley is outcasted as a monster by the town, Dolphus Raymond must pretend to be a drunk to avoid further discrimination and Tom Robinson is found guilty in court despite his innocence.

Prejudice is the intellectual or moral bias of a race and/or group of people based upon strict opinions. It is treating someone harshly based upon a person’s overall opinion on that race. Prejudice is usually based upon stereotypes of the victimized group that others may attach to them, being true or untrue. Prejudice has been seen throughout the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee whether it was against the African-American population or perpetrated against white folks in Maycomb by blacks. Prejudice is seen throughout the novel to be wrong as certain characters in the novel are shown to be against their group's stereotypes, whether it is blacks such as Tom Robinson or n white folks such as Atticus Finch or Dolphus Raymond.
He reflects his feelings towards black people including Tom. According to him, they are useless, rude and they can also steal the belongings of the Maycomb folks. He introduces them as they are posing danger so they should be wiped out of Maycomb. After the trial and death of Tom Robinson, Bob Ewell nourishes Atticus, Judge Taylor, and Tom’s wife, Helen, hatred groundlessly.
Social prejudice is shown throughout Harper Lee’s award winning book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee powerfully analyses the theme social prejudice, and its effect on people. Such as how the Social prejudice is discrimination based on your status in society. An example of social prejudice would be the Radley family, which consists of Boo Radley, Nathan Radley and Arthur Radley. As they haven’t been out of their house in years people are lead to believe the rumours.
PREJUDICE I always thought prejudice always came in one form; appearance. But by reading and watching this semester, I’ve learned that it comes in the form of religious beliefs, wealth, and reputation, also. Over the course of the first semester in this English class, we learned about themes like prejudice, mercy, materialism, hatred, revenge, and courage by reading 3 books and spending a while learning about the Holocaust (watched 2 movies and read a Holocaust book of our choice, as well as presentations throughout). I’m going to focus on the theme of prejudice in the units that we studied.
