The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is placed in Maycomb County, Alabama, in the era of the Great Depression. The novel stars Scout, a girl who is trying to grow up in the Great Depression era, Scout’s father, Atticus, is acting as a defense attorney for a falsely accused black man, Scout also has to deal with growing up next to a scary, and mysterious neighbor. A few examples are Mr Raymond having to act drunk to not be judged for being with a black woman, People are judging Boo based on what they have heard from others and nothing factual, People judged the Cunninghams for how they act in Entailments and how the Cunningham boy ate, As Scout said as she watched Walter Cunningham Jr eat “”but he’s drowned his dinner in syrup””. Some people thought of the Ewells as uneducated because the Ewell kids only go to the first day of school to get relief money from government, and people judge Mr Ewell because he wastes all of his money on Alcohol, and the Radleys were judged because they don’t act the part of the social norm of Maycomb County, Alabama. The story follows Atticus,Scout,Jem, and Dill as they journey through a world of prejudice towards black people. Atticus who is a lawyer is defending Tom Robinson who is accused of rape. The trial seems rigged as Tom is black and the accuser saw that as an opportunity.

In 1955, a young black male was killed and dumped in the river, only being found five days later. The boy was identified as Emmett Till and it was proven that two white males were responsible for the murder due to overwhelming evidence, but neither one of them were charged for their crime. This trial turned out to be one of the most famous trials in American history and is still talked about today because of the blatant bias towards the whites in the 1950s.

In her description of Boo, she describes him as a "6-and-a-half-foot tall man who eats raw squirrels and cats. His hands are blood stained because he eats raw animals. There is a long-jagged scar that runs across his face; his teeth are yellow and rotten; his eyes pop, and he drools most of the time" (Lee.14).

In the beginning of the novel, the children soon become interested in the stories of their neighbor, “Boo” Radley. Boo has been locked in his house his whole life, so the children start to believe the stories of how scary and dangerous he is. Soon after, Boo starts to leave Jem and Scout gifts in an old tree when Atticus, their father, gets assigned to defend a black man. As the trial was coming up, Atticus had to prepare to prove that the black man, Tom Robinson, didn't rape a white woman.

Boo Radley was a victim because of the preconceived opinions formed by the kids of who he is.
