Prejudice in Maycomb County Throughout history, prejudice has followed certain groups. In TKMB prejudice is very strong and reaches a boiling point. In TKMB by Harper Lee many different themes are presented. Prejudice is one of them. Many groups of people are treated unfairly because of their stature, race, and gender. In Maycomb, prejudice is expressed because of stature. The amount of money that you have does not affect the way that people respect you. The way that you obtain that money is how you are respected. For example the cunninghams and the Ewells have close to the same amount of money but the Cunninghams own land and farm it. The Ewells don’t even try to make money. They receive all that they have from the government. They are just freeloaders that do nothing to contribute to their society. Even though you can be respected with little or no money, you cannot have power in Maycomb without having more money than everybody else. Jem makes a remark about the way he views social classes in Maycomb, “There are 4 kinda …show more content…
During the 1930’s in the south was one of the most violent times for black people living down there. They were constantly being attacked for things that were false and also they were n0ot given fair chances. For example Tom Robinson was innocent of rape and it was very easy to see that but the jury was all white and the whole town was not going to let an innocent black man prevail over a guilty white man. Then when Tom was sent to prison he tried to escape. Instead of shooting him once to stop him, he was shot 17 times dead. The town was not even given more than 2 days to grieve his death, no obituary in the paper or anything like that. The hate for blacks is so much that Atticus decides to defend one and he becomes hated just for defending one. You can see the racism in the area by just listening how they talk. Many people in the town will constantly use hurtful words like”n***r” and
In To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses the passage starting on page 327 and ending on page 331 to show Maycomb’s blindness to prejudice in their own town. Throughout the entire book there are many difference types of prejudice including race, gender, and age prejudice, but no one seems to realize they are being prejudice. When examples of prejudice come a long that are not focused in Maycomb (in this case the Nazis and Jews) the town of Maycomb is upset by it. It is hypocritical of them to think prejudice outside of Maycomb is bad, when it is such a big problem in Maycomb and they don’t even realize it.
The prejudice in Maycomb is so strong that a clear line has been

Prejudice Can Lead to Injustice Prejudice can lead to injustice. Prejudice is defined as preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Whether it be in the courtroom or judging the menacing looking dog before meeting it. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, prejudice is present through the entire book. Prejudice has existed in many forms around the world for many years, be it in the form of racism, classism, or sexism. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird prejudice can be seen everywhere in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, where the protagonist Scout lives with her brother Jem. The types of prejudice found in Maycomb include: sexism against women, classism against the poor, and racism against colored people. Although prejudice has these many forms, it can be overcome through personal relationships. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses the characters of Arthur “Boo" Radley, Mr. Dolphus, and Mrs. Dubose to reveal the novel’s theme of how prejudice can be overcome.
During the 1930s in Alabama the Great Depression was terrible. There were no jobs, no money, and very little respect for others with different skin colors. In this novel you will find out what the Great Depression has done to a small community that contains groups of blacks and whites. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme of prejudice is shown by the social class, racism, and gender of a small group of people in a small town.
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee explores the concept that when one acts hypocritical or prejudiced, it is hard to identify. An example of this is at the missionary circle, when Mrs. Merriweather says, “I tell you there are some good but misguided people in this town. Good, but misguided. Folks in this town who think they’re doing right, I mean. Now far be it from me to say who, but some of ‘em in this town thought they were doing the right thing a while back, but all they did was stir ‘em up.
In Harper Lee’s novel (1960),to kill a MockingBird, one of the major themes is man’s inhumanity to man. This is shown through the Boo Radley, Tom Robinson and Dolphus Raymond subplots. All three characters can be seen as examples of the proverbial mockingbird. This inhumanity shows that Maycomb might not be the melancholic, quiet town that is described in the book by Scout,’”Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town’” (6).
The most obvious one is racial discrimination. The black community suffers a lot in Maycomb. Black people are thought to be inferior to the whites and are usually treated disrespectfully and humiliating. They are the easy target. A representative from the black community is Tom Robinson.
Prejudice was a serious issue during the Great Depression. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are all kinds of discrimination and prejudice shown through the eyes of a young girl named Scout. Through her perspective, we get an insight on her everyday life and the type of prejudice she sees and faces. In To Kill A Mockingbird, there are many kinds of prejudice that change the everyday lives of the people who are affected by it.
“She was a widow, a chameleon lady who worked in her flower beds in an old straw hat and men's coveralls, but after her five o'clock bath she would appear on the porch and reign over the street in magisterial beauty” (59). Chameleons are distinctive lizards with the ability to turn into bright beautiful colors, yet still blend in and avoid judgment. Miss Maudie, being described as a chameleon lady, was a rare exception to prejudice. She seemed to be the only women in the small town of Maycomb not pre-judged for her clothing choices. In a rural town in 1960 Alabama, prejudice would be a common reaction due to the low exposure of diversity, and characters like aunt Alexandra definitely demonstrated to others like Miss Maudie.
Prejudice beliefs Southern trees bear strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. (Billie Holiday and Abel Meeropol, 1937) Strange Fruit, written while lynching occurred, nauseates me as Billie Holiday and Abel Meeropol show the everyday horror living in the south. The poem prompts the realization of lynching that existed in our society.
