Illusion v.s Reality
We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality (Iris Murdoch). In the great gatsby by F.S Fitzgerald some characters aren't happy with their lives so they pretend to be something they are not to give others the illusion of something they want to be seen as to fit into society. The people in the great gatsby have trouble accepting their reality so they build a world full of illusions and lies. There are many types of illusions in the book like Gatsby and Daisy's love for each other but in reality, they both love money more than each other. Gatsby has the illusion that Daisy is the perfect

Nick's family wants to be seen as a powerful wealthy family. ¨The Carraways are something of a clan, and we have a tradition that we’re descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather’s brother, who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War, and started the wholesale hardware business that my father carries on to-day¨(Fitzgeard,). Nick’s family achieved the American Dream through hard work. Referring to the family’s tradition of who they were descended from, he admits that’s all an illusion. Gatsby wants people to think that he comes from a wealthy family. “I'll tell you God's truth… I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west .”(Fitzgerald,). the truth of his family background is a definite example of the false reality Jay portrays. Gatsby also wants to be seen as an intelligent wealthy man. ¨See!’ he cried triumphantly. ‘It’s a bonafide piece of printed matter. It fooled me. This fella’s a regular Belasco. It’s a triumph. What thoroughness! What realism! Knew when to stop, too – didn’t cut the pages. But what do you want? What do you expect?¨(Fitzgeard, ). Gatsby’s life is all for a show, he has a library filled with books that have never been read, making him seem more cultured than he is. While Gatsby can buy the things that rich people have, he can’t buy education or …show more content…
Tom is having an affair but he refuses to divorce daisy because he doesn't want people to gossip about him. ¨What I say is, why go on living with them if they can't stand them? If I was them I'd get a divorce and get married to each other right away. ' 'It's his wife that's keeping them apart¨(Fitzgerald,). Tom wants people to see him as a loyal man with a perfect family but in reality, that's not true. Myrle love the idea of having a wealthy life with a rich husband but she didn't have that so even tho she loved her husband she loved the idea of a wealthy life which led to her having an affair with tom. ‘I spoke to her,’ he muttered, after a long silence. ‘I told her she might fool me but she couldn’t fool God. I took her to the window’ – with an effort he got up and walked to the rear window and leaned with his face pressed against it – ‘and I said ‘God knows what you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been doing. You may fool me, but you can’t fool God!’ Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from the dissolving night. ‘God sees everything,’ repeated Wilson ‘That’s an advertisement,’ Michaelis assured him. Something made him turn away
Born James Gatz, his economic turn began before the story even began; when Gatsby was 17. He was a poor, and ambitious boy, and a passing millionaire took notice of this, along with “James Gatz’s” first impression, he was hired. Gatsby’s tastes, and ideology remain fixed on his desires of wealth from here on out. Even as the modern Jay Gatsby, his ideology is ever present; to do whatever it takes to live lavishly. Of course, this dramatic change and ambition was met with a crushing defeat when his employer died, and his days of wealth were squandered.
An example of the motif of lies/ illusion is given when Jordan says, “She’s not to know about it. Gatsby doesn’t want her to know. You’re just supposed to invite her to tea”. Not only does this show that Gatsby and Daisy are lying, but it also shows Nick’s willingness to lie on behalf of Gatsby. Before Daisy arrived at Nick’s cottage, Gatsby had ordered lots of flowers and cakes, and he did this to make the cottage seem like a fancy place instead of a humble home.
Tom had many affairs throughout his marriage with Daisy but he still says, “‘And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time’”. (131) He claims to have always loved her, even though he never sought out for the relationship until the end. The men never showed interest and their relationship slowly fell apart, and they didn’t care until it was too
Tom remains unfaithful through his and Daisy’s entire marriage, lacking the decency to even keep his infidelity a secret. Tom has no shame when it comes to his affairs, showing up in public with his mistress and even referring to her as “his girl”. He even defends his infidelity by claiming that he “Once in a while [would] go off on a spree and make a fool of [himself], but [would] always come back, and in [his] heart [he] loves her all the time. ”As a result of Tom’s unacceptable behavior as a spouse, it is no surprise when Daisy does not hesitate to begin an affair with Gatsby.
Believing that you can live in a false reality you created for yourself can cause setbacks in your life and make you somebody that you’re not. The novel, “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald talks about Gatsby creating a false reality for himself and how that ultimately lead to his death. Ever since Gatsby moved into the West Egg, his goal has always been to win Daisy’s love back. The reason why he even bought that house was so that he could be next to her.
In life, what is perceived tends to show misconception in how thoughts play out. One prime character in the novel is, Jay Gatsby, he was not capable to decide between the love he felt for Daisy and the illusion that he could recapture her love by inventing a false past. Jay believed he could repeat the past. In the novel, Jay Gatsby refuses to establish the differences in the reality of his life and his illusions for his love for Daisy. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic: “The Great Gatsby,” displays how deception effects when one falls in love and when one realizes reality.
This all makes the life of Gatsby appear to be an entire facade. One way in which Jay Gatsby puts on a false front is when he is talking about his money and how he has come to gain all of his wealth. He tells Nick that he inherited all of his money from his family in the Midwest. In the novel, Gatsby says, “My family all died and I came into a great deal of money.” (Fitzgerald 70)
Within the novel, Tom chooses worldly desires over his relationship with his wife. Instead of being a loyal husband to daisy, Tom takes part in an affair with another woman. This claim is supported when Tom says to Nick “I want you to meet my girl.” ( Fitzgerald 24) Tom says in front of Gatsby, Jordan, Nick, and Daisy “ Once in a while I go off on a spree and make a fool of myself, but I always come back, and in my heart, I love her all the time.”
“ (Fitzgerald 15). This shows how little Tom actually cared about Daisy. He was cheating on Daisy while she was fully aware of what was going on, yet he didn’t care. Tom may have loved the idea of having Daisy as his wife, but he didn’t truly love her if he could cheat on
Everybody has to go through life, through ups and downs and everything. While going through life routines and shortcuts start to develop and the lines between illusion and reality become blurred. But, when a new struggle comes up, which can't be easily crossed then you might create a fake reality. Whether you yearn for the past and are remembering it to be better than it actually was or a whole different reality is what stays in the mind of many characters in the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. One of the most blatant illusion examples that is seen as reality in The Great Gatsby involves the main character actually; Mr. Gatsby himself.
Gatsby is a wealthy man who lives in West Egg. He tells Nick that he is “the son of some wealthy people in the Middle West” (Fitzgerald, 65). He later states, “I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford, because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition” (Fitzgerald, 65). This is what Gatsby wants Nick to believe but, in reality, Nick tells the reader that Gatsby was a man by the name of James Gatz and he was the son of unsuccessful farmers.
Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is led to his demise by his philosophy of idealism that prevents his from accepting reality. Idealism is an outlook that can lead to joy and hope, but reality cannot be escaped forever. By creating a fantasy world filled with illusions, Gatsby is given a false sense of fulfillment that allows him to continuously pursue unattainable goals with optimism. Eventually, the daze of happiness will come to an end, and the idealist will be awakened to the heartbreaks of the real world.
Characters throughout The Great Gatsby present themselves with mysterious and questionable morals. Affairs, dishonest morals, criminal professions, weak boundaries and hypocritical views are all examples of immorality portrayed in The Great Gatsby. In F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, lies and mischief fill the lives of many and significantly damage numerous relationships. First, Jay Gatsby's whole life is consumed into a massive lie. His personality traits set him apart from others and the attention he accumulates motivates him to falsely portray his life.
In the present time, Daisy is moved on and married, with a child in a beautiful grand home. Her relationship with Tom can be speculated to be based on her wanting to gain his finances or that he can support her like no one else can. Daisy portrays an idealistic vision of herself, and , throughout the story, shows a selfish and narcissistic persona at times. Daisy and Gatsby
A main theme in the Great Gatsby is illusion vs reality. F. Scott Fitzgerald demonstrates this by introducing Gatsby to the readers, a character who shows off a completely different side of himself for the love of Daisy. Fitzgerald uses this theme as a way to show readers that the illusion of something never compares to the reality of something else and he proves it by showing Gatsby's illusion of love and life. Gatsby talks about his young age as a time when his parents were rich and he lived a great life, using a facade to attract attention to Daisy. “I’ll tell you the God’s truth…
