Self-understanding and Leadership
Part 1
Talking about an effective leader, there is no doubt that quite a large numbers of related attributes can be listed. According to the theory which is first propounded by Lussier, R. N. and Achua, C. F. (2010), the five key elements of leadership are about reaction of changes, relation between leaders and followers, influence to others, relationship with people as well as organizational objectives. For instance, an effective leader should have high cognitive competence, great resilience, good trustworthiness and interpersonal communication competence and so on. Besides all these characteristics listed above, self-understanding is also one of the key competence of leadership considering that an authentic

(1976) came up with a theory that the self-concept could be described as the following seven features. They are organized, multifaceted, hierarchical, stable, developmental, evaluative, and differentiable. A particular memory system will be adopted by a particular person to sort and label his or her experiences. It shows a way of organizing experiences and giving them meaning. And being well organized is one of the main features of self-concept. Multifaceted means those particular aspects reflect the previous memory system adopted by a certain people, such as family, social acceptance, physical attractiveness, and so on. And for hierarchical, in other words, to classify into different ranks, general self-concept could be divided into two constituents, academic self-concept and non-academic self-concept. And for non-academic self-concept, it could be divided into social self-concepts, physical self-concepts, as well as emotional …show more content…
Good self-understanding could help a person to clarify what is really being expected and what is really important. A clear goal can greatly improve the efficiency of working, and it also helps people knowing what is motivating themselves from their inside so that they could motivate others in a better way. Developing of self-understanding is a life-long task for every one of us, and it is essential and truly helpful to help people being better
It is of great importance that a leader understands one’s people, for this understanding between leader and subjects form mutual respect. A leader must attempt, if the means are
For example, if someone emplaces the idea that one is overweight in one’s head, one is going to possibly take that into account when looking in the mirror. Self-concept is also said to contribute to how we may behave in the future by setting up goals that reflect our opinions of ourselves. In some instances, individuals may believe that they will be a successful doctor and, because of that self-concept, it becomes reality. This is known as self-fulfilling prophecies. Self-esteem is the worth of what one takes from one’s self-awareness and self-concept.
Self-concept Self-concept is the way an individual see’s
An individuals identity is directly related to their self concept, depending on a subjective self based impression of the self. Two facets of self concepts include personality and culture/gender roles. Personality is a characteristic that can accurately describe ones behavior most of the time. Culture/gender roles influence how one acts based on social pressure and norms. This means that self concept is both enduring but changeable.
This final battle between Scott and the leader of the exes, Gideon, sets the stage for realizations about self for everyone involved. Self concept refers to the overall idea of who a person thinks he or she is. Each person has an idea of self that contains a short list of characteristics that he or she finds important. Many things can influence this. It is influenced by context, through groups we are tied with, through our interactions with others, and their reactions to us.
Self, is a dynamic, open system, based on ones actions. King (1981) explains self as Jersild’s (1952) definition that “knowledge of self is a key to understanding human behavior because self is the way I define me to myself and to others. Self is all that I am. I am a whole person. Self is what I think of me and what I am capable of being and doing.
In Mcleod’s article, it said that people “‘think about, evaluate, or perceive’ themselves” (Mcleod 1). Mcleod talks, in the article, about how people thinking, evaluating, and perceiving about themselves is call self-concept. Whenever people think about themselves, most of the time, people are confused about whether or not they are pursuing right actions for their future, especially people with low self-esteem . Furthermore, people get more confused if their actions dramatically differ from others. However, again, people’s actions determine who they are, so even if their actions are dramatically different from others, it may be a path for that person’s success.
This is the story of my self-concept. Self-concept can be defined as “your overall perception of who you are” (McCornack 39). The development of any person 's self-concept begins when important components of one 's life begins to take place. For example, my brother and I are three years apart, I can’t remember my life before him. He helped me to develop in many ways, we developed together.
If we look at the aim of psychology from this perspective, the aim is to look beyond superficial differences such as gender, race and culture to unveil these processes. In traditional psychology the “Self” is seen as a restricted or bounded and autonomous being. Internal attributes such as emotions, independence, thoughts, contextual factors as well as social factors defines the
The diverse involvements of the self are a consequence of speckled unconscious generalities about self, becoming overriding at times, in different social or cultural settings. These generalizations, or self-schemas, are fed by various conscious and unconscious inputs, which may be of personal or social origin. Accordingly, self-schemas need not be consistent with each other. Their general organization can fluctuate from being rather disjointed to effectively harmonious. A harmonious level of self-organization manifests in an intuitive sense of self as intending, attending, and expecting according to unified attitudes.
There are eight concepts that form its foundation (Henderson & Thompson, 2018): 1. Differentiation of self - refers to the manner in which a person is able to separate thoughts and feelings, respond to anxiety, and cope with the variables of life while pursuing personal goals. 2. Detriangulation of Self from the family emotional system - represents the smallest stable network of human relationship systems (larger relationship systems can be perceived as a network of interlocking triangles). It also refers to two family members bring a third into a conflict situation.
It is also key to be aware what we are or are not capable of in our work. It is important to continue to grow and develop personally and professionally. This is an ongoing process throughout our lives. According to Day, Halpin & Zaccaro, 2004, (cited by Share & Lalor, 2009, p123) for ‘self-development to occur, a person needs to become aware of his/her internal processes {thoughts, feelings, moods, beliefs and actions} and have an awareness of how these internal processes impact on others as an external process’. Self-awareness and self-development work hand in hand with one another, as do personal and professional development.
Mudrock and Scutt (2003) explaines self-development in the context of a manager, to improve themselves and perform successfully in order to come across objectives of the organisation. Stickland (1996) states self-development paves the way for employees to be succeeded in their career demands in the emotional convention. In the same way, In contrast, Stickland (1996) argues self-development merely as a self-motivating model and further indicates that people feel difficult to manage self-development procedures without an approach for the direction and practical assistance hence the procedures of self-development are complicated. However, Pedler (1982) mentions that self-development assists managers in organisations to identify their own matters and develop their role as a manager by improving knowledge and skills with the guide provided by colleagues at the
Individual Reflective Paper Introduction Leadership, a controversial concept, has been studied for centuries. Scholars who study leadership have argued with the insight of leadership for many decades and finally promote a wide range of understandings of it. My Self-Concept My self-concept includes a number of different adjectives and roles, these include both good and bad things. The adjectives I use to describe myself are as follows: kind, loyal, selfish, hard working, apathetic, practical, honest, occasionally rude, and procrastinator. As for the roles that I fill, I am a son, a brother, a friend, a student, the oldest son, and a teacher. Self-concept is a product of many things, it is not just simply what a person is.
