Social construction is an idea or practice that a group of people agree exists. It is maintained over time by people taking its existence for granted. An example of social construction is from everyday experiences with sex and gender. Each baby is born with either a penis or vagina. The baby then begins the process of being either assigned to being a boy or girl. This is very important because its one of the first things you want to know before communicating with the baby. You usually dont worry about the baby's other charaticristics, like their race or econmic class. Most parents in general do not try to signal the clas of their baby with his or her clothing. The reasoning for people to know the sex of the baby is to now how they should interact with them. If its a boy a person might walk up and say something in a traditional masculine style, such as "hey, bud!". If its a girl the person might say something that is more appropriate for a little girl. Eventually these interactions start to mold the kid to the kind of person they become. Children come to themselves as either a boy or a girl. They start to do things like a little boy or a little girl. One explanation of social order is that it is ratonal for individuals to act this way. Students know it is in their self interest to sit quietly and pay, or pretend to pay, attention. Perhaps a student hopes to apply to graduate school and wants a letter of recommendation from the professor. This goal helps motivatvion to respond to the classroom environment. The professor's willingness to write a letter is an incentive for good behavior. The letter acts as an incentive, stimualting the response of the student who wants it. The student tries to make a good impression, keeping in the back of her mind that if she turns around
