In today's society it's seen as crazy if someone steps out of the boundaries that have been set over time. Language, gender, and culture all have boundaries that individuals like Butler, Tannen, Brooks, Young, and Lorde were forced to stay within until they realized that they didn't belong within them. Each of them has strayed away from the social norms set in order to show society that those boundaries don't necessarily fit the needs of every individual today. And this doesn't apply just to these individuals it applies to all those who feel that they are not able to form their own identities in order to fit in with those around them.
Butler is a good example of someone who felt the confined, by the boundaries set by society, she felt that gender was label put on her. And that it didn't necessarily have to define her as an individual, so she decided to be who she wanted to be and not care about what people thought. The problem is some people become bothered when a women decides to dress more masculine or when a man dressed more feminine. That shouldn't be the case, people have to learn to simply accept that

And they can speak out, but are afraid to because of what society will say, anyone that acts or dresses differently than everyone else is automatically alienated or seen as a rebel. David brooks talks about how he didn't feel like he couldn't be good in school, so he decided that school wasn't for him and rebelled against it. In school your are pushed to meet certain requirements, test scores, homework, or projects. And many that can't meet those requirements feel left out and that shouldn't be that case in any situation whether it's education, gender, or someone being
People are able to interpret things differently and don’t have to simply follow the dominant meaning of something. She states, “how at every moment, the world presents us with a composition in which a multitude of meanings and realities are available, and you are able to swim, lucid and self-contained, in that turbulent sea of multiplicity” (311). When presented with something, someone is able to create multiple meanings and definitions by what they choose. This relates to Susan Faludi’s essay “The Naked Citadel” where the Cadets go to the Treehouse due to their gender confusion. At the Treehouse, the Cadets have sexual relationships with the Drag Queens there which creates a stereotype that they are actually feminine and not a “Whole Man”.
Many today conform, much like like Dana, to achieve societal acceptance, thus obeying gender roles. Few rebel, like Sarat, breaking societal expectations. Not all gender expectations are so vibrantly contrasted to be easily seen. Just like culture today, some of our gender roles are so deeply rooted, they mostly go unrecognized. These silent gender roles manifest today through small comments like: "You through like a girl.
While their peers knew this is not how they wanted to live. Yael attempts to fit into this role, for example, wearing makeup in addition to being interested in fashion. While their attempt fails, it does show how gender is ultimately more of a performance we put on for those around us rather than how we actually desire to be perceived. Judith Butler emphasizes this in her theories as she believes that we perform gender rather than expressing it. This means that we are pushed into these gender roles, actively acting off of impressions of what we are told we should be or present.
Women and men are expressing themselves and I think it is great. Everyone is their own person, they shouldn’t be held back from being who they are. New improvements in media are actually supporting individuality and are actually encouraging it. People are inspired by celebrities and celebrities are advocating for personal expression. The 1920s sparked the match that started the evolution and growth of originality.
Many people in today's society are deciding not to be themselves, but rather conforming to the norm. People are living their lives using a counterfeit identity instead of being the original person that God made them out to be. God made everyone different and unique for a reason; He did not intend for everyone to be the same. The problem that is prevalent across the world is that nobody wants to be seen has weird or different from everybody else, so they do whatever it takes to be seen as normal. When people make that decision to fall into the pressures of fitting in, they tend to lose sight of who they really are.
For many years now woman have been able to express themselves, and show that they are comfortable with their bodies. But once again the male hierarchy has gone into play, and girls are told to hide their bodies away, and not be who they want to be. So that is what the young girls of this generation are being taught, that they need to be respectful at all times and make sure that the boys have all their accommodations met. One study in particular called the “Everyday Sexism Project” tells a story of a young girl in high school, “I got dress coded at my school for wearing shorts.
Previously, I believe it could be said that women, while used as a symbol of sex, were never completely allowed to own and and proudly flaunt their sexuality. Another musical, Annie Get Your Gun, also pushed the limits of gender. Annie is a
Some just choose not to belong to a specific group. Society, as a whole, can be horrible. They can force you to change how you act to conform to what they think is acceptable. If you don’t change your ways, society has a way to push you out, to make you an outcast or an outsider. This can cause many people to change how they dress, how they talk, what they watch, etc.
In my practice of Community Health Nursing, I have over 130 patients. Social determinants of health are something that I always take into consideration when I am developing a plan of care and service plan for these patients. I understand that Social Determinants are the circumstances that we born into, and develop in throughout out lives, including our jobs, and as we mature, it continues to affect us. These circumstances or situations also include our health care systems, and how they affect and contribute to our own
Society today is really judgemental. If you don’t wear the right clothes or have the right car then you will get judged. It’s kinda like in the book The Crucible if you weren't a puritan then you were an outcast or you might have been a witch. One of the puritan girls Abigail Williams blamed a lot of women who were called puritans and lived the puritan way. In this case people just judged them without looking into far more research.
Sometimes we want to be different, but we can't. We want to stand out, but we are afraid to do so. And sometimes, we might form our own opinion. However, sooner or later we are forced to change our own opinion so that society accept us. Modern life is confusing.
Elisabeth W. Fernea talks about this perceptions “Many objects signify values in society and become charged with meaning, a meaning that may be different for members of the society and for observers of that society (Fernea 266)”. We all have different mindsets and perspectives , women choose different clothing styles for many reason such as , comfort, creativity, identity, protection, religion and other purposes. Another example is Leila Ahmed and her decision to unveil because to her the veil signified oppression and inequality. However other females from her circle felt very different about the
In today’s society, people probably will not get killed for being themselves, but they could be teased or bullied. Society today has so many rules to fit in, and most people are not willing to do those. Some of those rules are downright gross, or just really weird. Outside influences should not indicate who you are going to be, or change you. People should not fit others into a category, and those people should not be okay with it.
People allow the societal norms to rule their lives, trying to dress and act as the society wants them to as opposed to what they feel like dressing or acting. In the past, however, the oppression had a more prominent effect. In post-World War
“Don't trade your authenticity for approval” stated an unknown author. In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird Scout is a young girl who breaks the social norm of wearing proper clothes such as dresses. In the town called Maycomb, the social norms are for whites to separate from African Americans along with women dressing a certain way and men dressing another. Those social norms don’t just exist in Maycom they are also in the real world. Ellen DeGeneres is a woman in the real world who breaks those social norms.
