In the novel Fahrenheit 451, advanced technology, unless used with care can be destructive to a productive society. The novel calls upon this theme many times as the story and characters progress and change. The story is set years in the future, in a dystopian civilization. Such a vile society sensors the people that live there, enforcing ignorance upon them. The main character, Guy Montag, fights to bring back knowledge and books to the society with the help of a retired professor Faber, who remembers the days of when knowledge was about. Ray Bradbury uses exemplary writing techniques to create a vivid image of the society that Montag and Faber dwell in. As this adventure takes place, the theme of advanced …show more content…
The mechanical hound is a tracking tool used by the fireman and law enforcement officials, the hound is a mechanical dog that apparently never fails when assigned a target. The hound is a symbol of fear in the society as said on page 28 “The Mechanical Hound slept but it did not sleep, lived but it did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminated kennel back in a dark corner of the firehouse.” When Montag says this he is describing the hound in fear, fear of being hunted down and paralyzed with its needle it injects its victims you to render it motionless. In a way the hound symbolizes the irradiation of those who seek knowledge from books, it puts fear into those who even consider taking action. The hound is being destructive to once productive society, it's not used with care as on page 29 “The animals were turned loose. Three seconds later the game was done, the rat, cat, or chicken caught half across the areaway, gripped by gentle paws while a four inch hollow steel needle plunged down from the proboscis of the hound to inject massive jolts of morphine or procaine. The pawn was then tossed in the incinerator. A new game began.” The hound is supposed to be used a tracking tool to hunt down these “fugitive” intellectuals, it is being misused and is becoming destructive to the society. The people who dwell in the society don't see it as a problem or even being misused, they find this lethal dog entertaining. As Montag tries to make his escape after being identified as the man who murdered Captain Beatty he runs through the streets trying to make it to the river. As he runs he peers into Windows of houses that have their televisions covering the chase. The people are so amused seeing this dog try to kill a man, they don't even know who he is, what he's done all they know is
Mildred betrays Montag by telling Beatty that he has been reading books. Captain Beatty comes to Montag’s house and is going to make him burn his house down. Secretly, Montag is communicating with Faber through a special earpiece. Faber is trying to give Montag advice on how to get out of the situation but it is no use. Faber says, “ Montag, can’t you run, get away!
Have you ever watched TV or played a videogame so much that you feel you are a part of it? In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, America in the 21st Century is this lifeless reality. This futuristic society has become a technology obsessed, in which people have more relationships with a “family” on a gigantic screen than their own spouse. The people live in a world in which it is almost necessary to use Seashell earbuds to pass the time of the day and even to simply fall asleep. When technology replaces real people and living things, people will ultimately lose relationships and sight of their own emotions.
The book, Fahrenheit 451 takes placed around the 24th century where technology controls our everyday lives and books are thought of as bad things because it opens our minds. This book takes place in the future, there is a chance that we might end up relying on technology more than we rely on our self. The society in Fahrenheit 451 is very similar to ours, technology has taken over and made society very close-minded. Technology makes you see what you want to see, not what is real. People don’t want to remove their eyes from large TV screens to see why things happen, and to notice all the little things in life.
The hound can sense the smell of books on anyone, so if it smells them, the creature will immediately alert the fireman. C: The authorities use the hound as a way to keep the surveillance discreet. C: The people of the society do not know what the hound can do and what it can sense, leading its methods to work well.
Author of Master of Stupidity, Toba Beta once said, “Be careful with too much joy, it can make you numb in life.” In science fiction, the element of dystopian societies is used to warn readers. Authors like Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut are well known for dystopian stories that possess the ability to affect society in the future. In Fahrenheit 451, the society is vulnerable to influence easily due to a certain numbness of the mind. The people living in the society of Fahrenheit 451 have become almost emotionless unless the people have to use their brain too much which is when the people get emotional.
The Hound held the poor animals, which probably fidgeted fearfully, in its paws while it put harmful chemicals into the other animal’s body. Instead of the society helping and waiting for nature to flourish, the people take the animals out of the environment only to torture them. In the society where Fahrenheit 451 occurs, animals are unwanted and uncared
To burn them down just because they have books. Beatty, Montag’s boss and also the Fire chief, tells Montag, “Montag, a funny thing. Heard tell me this morning. Fireman in Seattle purposely set a Hound to his own chemical complex and let it loose” (31). The depression and the lack of will to live is rampant throughout the entire society, even the Firemen commit suicide by the very thing that is supposed to help them, and Technologically Advanced Hound.
Hounds are made to kill anyone that breaks the law. The government doesn 't care if violence is used, its part of life. “A four inch hollow steel needle plugged down from the proboscis of the Hound to inject massive jolts of morphine and procaine.” (Bradbury 22).
The quote "'I wouldn't want to be its next victim'" (25) shows how the Mechanical Hound stops Montag from having his own opinion, so he has to stay in line. This is similar to how people today are scared of being tracked, so they won't express their opinions. Another quote "The Hound did not touch the world. It carried its silence with it" (131) shows how the Hound was able to locate and stalk anyone, so people couldn't act out of the government's rules. This is similar to how people today can't say something controversial, or else they can be tracked by things like GPS trackers.

In the American society, knowledge is needed to succeed and strive in the world. People are trying as hard as possible to get a strong education. In Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, the setting is a futuristic city where firemen instead of putting out fires, start fires and try to burn all the books left. The citizens in this society fear the firemen, causing them to hide ay books they own, hoping they will not be sniffed out by the Mechanical Hound, an invention that roams at night and tries to sense any books, then reports back to the firehouse. The city has also created technology that makes the citizens oblivious to the outside world.
It "lives" in a paradoxical state, and is used only for killing and destroying. The Hound is treated as an unfailing, quick fix to those that have gone astray from society's life guidelines. The Mechanical Hound is the prime example of society's perversion of natural life, as it distorts the image of an amiable family dog into a robotic murder machine that will never feel any of the emotions a real, living dog does. The Mechanical Hound is trapped in a perpetual state
The Hound is the way Montag sees that censorship is a poor choice. The Hound was a motivating factor towards Montag when he realized that things in his society weren 't right. This motivates him to create the change that leads to overcoming
In today’s society, technology plays a very important role in its ability to function, it helps people find information, communicate with others far away and provides entertainment. In “Fahrenheit 451”, a book written by Ray Bradbury, a dystopian future where books have been made illegal is presented. In the article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Nicholas Carr, raises many questions about technology and its effects on society. It’s quite evident that we have become quite dependent on technology due to our overconsumption of it.
In the novel, it chases Montag after he kills Beatty and flees to Faber’s house. Montag luckily lost the hound by jumping into the river, which didn't allow the dog to continue following Montag’s scent. Even though the setting and its surrounding can change a story, the plot can change it much
