Textual analysis is the other dimension which Idris Aman also focused on in his analysis of Barisan Nasional’s 2004 Malaysian general election manifesto. In this part, at the beginning of the paragraph, we can see that Idris Aman clearly stated the thesis which he claimed that there are three textual features that have been highlighted in the analysis which are grammar, vocabulary and the generic structure of the text in the manifesto. It is important for an analyst to state the thesis statement of a writing. This is because a thesis statement can aid a reader’s focus and understanding about the topic throughout the paragraph. This is because, at the beginning of the paragraph, we can see that he stated the definition, followed by the objectives of transitivity as well as the components of process of clause. That kind of arrangement can assist the readers to understand transitivity step by step especially for a beginner in critical discourse analysis. Besides, in the same paragraph, he also mentioned about the statistics of passive and active sentences used in the manifesto and how active clause works in order to gain political power. Examples of active clause also being included which he highlighted on the usage of pronouns ‘we’. However, the explanation regarding the examples is not clear enough. Here, it would be better if Idris Aman emphasizes more on the usage of pronouns ‘we’. For instance, mentioning about how the pronouns ‘we’ can add significant power to persuasive language.
