The ability to lead others, develop oneself and subordinates, and accomplish missions are core competencies that every leader should strive to perfect (Dept. of the Army, 2019). Each of these competencies describes a category of actions that leaders take. Leaders are able to identify their strengths and weaknesses by assessing their ability to perform the actions. Great leaders are masters of all three categories. One such leader was Martin Luther King, Jr. His leadership in the civil rights movement serves as a perfect example of how a great leader acts. It takes a lot of time and effort to develop one’s own abilities to the point of mastery. However, it is necessary to be able to pass on knowledge and experience to subordinates (Dept. of the Army, 2019). Subordinates look to leaders to answer their questions and to guide them through the unknown. It is the responsibility of leaders to have the answers or be able to find them. This does not mean that leaders should perform tasks in place of their subordinates. Leaders help subordinates develop by showing them how, without doing it for them (Dept. of the Army, 2019). Struggle is necessary for growth. Leaders must find a balance between providing help and allowing subordinates to struggle. The end goal is for the team to be able to function without the leader.
Passing on knowledge to followers was Martin Luther King, Jr.’s specialty as a preacher. Through his speeches, he educated his followers on the right way to effect change for the future. His foresight in understanding the importance of remaining peaceful came through his self-development. In one instance, he visited Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace, inspiring his faith in peace (Carson & Lewis, 2023). Follow the leader, a.k.a. do what the first person does and don’t do it wrong or you are out. This becomes burnt into children’s minds as what they think leadership is and has become what many people think it must be. Contrarily, a flourishing leader is one who listens. Who takes all member’s ideas into consideration, makes sure all are heard, and keeps a group in order while still taking into account what the group wants.
In the 1950’s and 60’s, the African American Civil Rights movement occurred. There were many leaders and pioneers of the movement, one of those leaders was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., some referred to him as Doc, Dr. King, Rev., and many more. Reverend King was one of many core leaders of this movement to break through racial segregation. There was Rosa Parks (Activist), James Baldwin (Writer), Nina Simone (Singer) , Jackie Robinson (Baseball Player) and even Muhammad Ali (Boxer) who have made somewhat of a change. In light of the fact of this movement, Dr. King had more than enough courage to express through his platform of “I Have a Dream”, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop”, and “The American Dream”.

Eisenhower “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it. To become an effective Military Leader, one need to have some significant leadership qualities”.
It is no secret that racism and a lack of equal rights have existed in the United States and other parts of the world. To influence the nation as a whole and bring about positive change, an outstanding leader became required. History has recognized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as a great leader. By articulating his goal of granting rights to everyone, Dr. King was able to demonstrate leadership in inspiring others. To win the rights of members of the community, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made sure that everyone stayed on target with non-violent protest and concentrated on the present.
Martin Luther King Jr. is known throughout the world for his leadership in the American Civil Rights movement. The Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s will always be remembered as an unstable period in American history. Racial tensions were at an all time high and our country, states, towns and families were torn over their views of racism. Leader Competencies are leadership skills and behaviors that contribute to superior performance. Leaders outdated skills and behaviors encouraged change over many years. The three main categories of competences are to Lead, Develop, and Achieve. Army leaders serve to lead others, develop themselves, environment and profession as a whole, and to also achieve organizational goals. In order for an Army leader to lead they must apply the attributes to guide Soldiers towards a common goal and mission accomplishments.

Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential leaders of his time and played a crucial role in the African-American Civil Rights movement. Luther was a charismatic leader who took a firm stand against the oppressive and racist regime of the United States (US), devoting much of his life towards uniting the segregated African-American community of the US. His efforts to consolidate and harmonise the US into one country for all is reflected in many of his writings and speeches spanning his career. As a leader of his people, King took the stand to take radical measures to overcome the false promises of the sovereign government that had been addressing the issues of racial segregation through unimplemented transparent laws that did nothing to change the grim realities of the society. Hence, King’s works always had the recurring theme of the unity and strength of combined willpower.
First and foremost, leaders come in all shapes and forms, there is not one set physical mold for them, but what they all do share are certain characteristics and desires. Leadership in and of itself, is the ability to guide others, take responsibility, and share a vision that inspires and leaves others with a sense of empowerment. Evidently, it takes an exceptional leader to exhibit exceptional leadership skills. Additionally, the most prominent act that all adequate leaders demonstrate is that they are steadily engaged in enhancing their leadership skills. Leadership is influencing those around you in a positive way. It also means inspiring others to achieve their goals, while also achieving yours along the way. While inspiration and achievement are essential to be a successful leader, I believe that the most important goal is to encourage others to also become effective leaders. This points to the fact that exercises in self-development and discipline were key to building leadership qualities. Leaders as mentioned before are role-models in society and when those leadership qualities are nurtured, the society as a whole benefits from them.
Thus, a leader may arise in any field be it politics, social service or sports. A leader possesses both talent and skill.
