Odysseus’s Characterization in the Odysseus In the Odyssey, there are many ways to characterize the characters, but the enneagram personality test is the best way to characterize these characters. For those who do not know what the enneagram test is, it is a personality test that will put you into one of the nine possible categories of personalities. It can describe the strengths and weaknesses that you most likely have. Of the nine personalities, Odysseus would be a challenger, confident but confrontational. Odysseus is a challenger because in the book he never backs down from a fight or challenge because he is confident he can win whatever the threat is, this shows that he is very confident

One instance where Odysseus was confident was in book 9 when he was inside the cave of the giant Cyclops Polyphemus. In this cave, he creates a plan to escape with their lives but it is very risky, but he is confident that the plan will work. The plan was to inebriate the Cyclops and wait for him to pass out, then when he is asleep take a pike and heat it on fire and plunge it into Polythemus’s eye and blind him. After that the Cyclops sat by the entrance and waited, hoping for them to be foolish enough to try and run by him, but Odysseus was too smart for this Cyclops. Odysseus told his men to cling to the underbelly of the ram inside of the cave and wait for Polyphemus to let them out to graze. Another example of him showing his confidence is when he finds out his men have been kidnapped and turned into pigs by Circe, a goddess. Odysseus receives help from a god named Hermes and is told how to handle the situation and is given something to eat that prevents her from enchanting him. When he gets into the home she offers him a soup that would've turned him into a pig along with his comrades. When she realizes that it wasn't working Odysseus pulls his sword out and threatens her so she will release his men. This shows he is confident because instead of running away he stayed and wasn't scared that his plan wasn't going to
Firstly, Odysseus’ intelligence is one of his strongest strengths going to war. In the book The Odyssey this quote clearly states “Nobody that's my name nobody so my mother and father call me, all my friends”(Homer 340). This shows that During a frightening time in the Book The Odysseus is a quick thinker. Furthermore the text states “They lumbered off,but laughter filled my heart to think how nobody”s name my great cunning stroked had duped them” (Homer 460). This quote indicates how Odysseus manages to outwit the bigger opponent with his quick but smart tactics.
The Odyssey by Homer follows Odysseus' journey back home after the Trojan War. As he embarks on his journey home, he encounters many foes. These challenges tested his leadership skills and how his men looked up to him. In Book 9, we see how having skills of confidence in authority, pride, and intellect helps Odysseus. We first see this display of pride when he says to the Cyclops, “We’re glad to say we’re men of
Sometimes Odysseus could be arrogant and that took away from people thinking highly of him. His pride turned into arrogance when he defeated Troy. His arrogance created difficulty for him and his crew to get back home. The Odyssey observes, “Endure, my heart; you’ve suffered worse than this” (Homer 309). This is when Odysseus is Odysseus’ is struggling
Odysseus is overly confident in his skills and has no problem boasting about it. He constantly makes himself and his skills seem more superior to others, making others feel ashamed. Odysseus also shows an extreme amount of confidence after injuring Kyklops. Once the job is done and Odysseus and his crew are leaving, Odysseus yells, “‘ Kyklops, if ever mortal men inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaka’” ( Fitzgerald 160).
Michael Camby Mr. Martin English 1 10 February 2023 The odyssey essay Today I'm going to talk about why I think Odysseus is a hero. Have you ever found yourself in a very tough situation that you do not know how to get out of? Odysseus has had that happen to him a lot that you will read about in this essay.
Overall, Odysseus is often portrayed as a “model hero”, but in reality he has many faults such as being untrustworthy, arrogant and
Odyssey Argumentative Essay Odysseus is an arrogant egotistical warrior who hardly ever takes the blame for his own actions. Since he does not take responsibility it shows his weaknesses that could be used against him if this were a war. Odysseus’s weaknesses are shown equally in the literature and the movie. In some ways the literature showed it better or explained it better than the movie did. But in some ways the movie outlined his weaknesses than the movie because it is more visual than when you are reading the story.
This text shows that Odysseus can be humble and accept that he needs to listen to survive and he alone can not keep his whole crew alive. Odysseus tends to use his own wit and skills to survive not needing others help, but sometimes he does need to take others advice to
In the beginning of the book Odysseus tried to show no weakness and to make sure everyone knew who he was. He thought the gods looked to him and he needed no one but himself. After his long journey when Athena tells him he is at Ithaca at last he is humbled and thankful. He says nothing about how he got there, but rather thanks the gods and is overjoyed to finally be home. This shows that he is humbled.
7-8). As this quote means that he is feared on a large scale for his cunningness and slyness. Odysseus manifests good leadership skills by tricking his enemies to get one step closer to his
Naturally, he has much to be proud of: his sexy and loyal wife, his bravery, and his victorious battles from the Trojan War and beyond. However, his arrogance creates a weakness in his character that negatively impacts himself and the people around him. The evolution in Odysseus’s personality turns him from an arrogant flaunter to a humble man, and demonstrates that the strifes he encounters during his journey home is not simply new experiences, but also his beginning of a profound revelation. Starting from the middle of the mountain, Odysseus’s new transformation will allow him to soar to the top with eagle
Just as Achilles is confronted in the Iliad with the problem of balancing his honor with his pride, Odysseus repeatedly faces situations in which self-restraint and humility must check bravado and glory-seeking. In his early adventures, he fails these tests, as when he taunts Polyphemus, inflaming Poseidon. As the epic progresses, Odysseus becomes increasingly capable of judging when it is wise to reveal himself and when it is appropriate to rejoice in his
Odysseus’s traits help him achieve his goal of returning to his home. Odysseus and his men have a lot of willpower to continue traveling after some dangerous and life risking experiences with cannibals, lotus-eaters, cyclops and many more creatures that could of killed Odysseus and his whole crew. Odysseus's confidence and epic hero traits only increase as the story goes on, his confidence in his men increase as he starts noticing how strong and powerful his men can be, and also shows confidence in
Odysseus was a man of great stature and strength; however, Odysseus was not only physically strong, but mentally strong as well (Olson). We can see Odysseus’ mental strength, or cunning, and bravery when he is in the den of Polyphemus and devises the plan to save him and his crew by calling himself nobody and stabbing out the cyclops’ eye. He also recognizes that he
An example of him being overconfident is when he taunts the Cyclops. While he is sailing away from the island, he taunts the Cyclops by yelling, “Cyclops, / if ever mortal man inquire / how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him / Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: / Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca” (Homer 484) He was being overconfident because by saying his name, he let the Cyclops know who really injured his eye. Another example of him being overconfident is when he decides to listen to the Sirens. Odysseus puts beeswax in the ears of his men but decides to not do this to himself.
