Many know that awful feeling when receiving an unfair punishment as a kid. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the narrator, Scout, is lectured by her father, Atticus, not to be involved in any more fights. Later on, when Scout is with her cousin, Francis, she hits him in response to his repetitive name-calling regarding her father. Before she could explain why she did what she did, her uncle spanked her. Scout was not punished fairly after the fight with Francis because she was not given a chance to explain. Scout's uncle punished her without even hearing her side of the story. After the incident when Uncle Jack comes into her room, she explains, “Well, in the first place you never stopped to gimmie a chance to tell my side of it-You just
In the beginning of To Kill A Mockingbird, [Character name] demonstrates an innocent and childlike behavior. She is barely experiencing the world and does not know about the persecution in Maycomb. She has not witnessed the trial and she hasn’t matured yet. She exhibits childish behavior because she fights when she hears people disrespecting Atticus and she barely starts to notice that Maycomb persecutes people. After Ms. Caroline punishes her for trying to explain Walter Cunningham’s situation, Scout decides to take revenge on Walter Cunningham by “rubbing his nose in the dirt.”
At the beginning of the novel, Jem is on the pre-conventional level; therefore, he acts childlike and wants to avoid punishment. The reason that Jem reacts this way because he does not want to be punished by society or the authority. In the novel, it implies: “ Atticus ain 't ever whipped me since I can remember. I wanta keep it that way” (Lee 56). This suggests that Jem is in the stage of obedience and punishment since he undertakes not wanting to disobey his father and does not want to be punished.
Aside from learning about her fellow citizens of Maycomb, Scout also had to start to protect herself, and her father from their neighbors and classmates. The atmosphere of discrimination towards the black defendant, and hatred towards their father, caused many uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous situations for the Finch Family. When Scout is confronted by her uncle Jack about a fight between Herself and her classmate, Scout responds “-tell you one thing right now, Uncle Jack, I’ll be-- I swear before God if I’ll sit there and let him say something about Atticus.” (114) This quote explains how she had to protect her father, and she could not just stand around and let him say malicious things about Atticus. Those actions were very brave of Scout, but she did not stop there.
Scout started a between her, Aunty, and Atticus and it was causing more stress with Atticus and when Jem overheard Jem told Scout to leave Aunty alone. When Scout figured Jem was telling to do something she didn’t like it very much but Jem got angry and told her “now I mean it, Scout, you antagonize Aunty and I’ll-I’ll spank you” which is something an older adult would do like Atticus. (184) Now that Jem is different and more mature, he tries to calm down Scout in his own way so the situation doesn’t get bigger. By doing this Scout thinks that Jem is now telling her what to do and when she throws a fit he tells her she’s going to hit her.
As human being were constantly judged by our appearance and by our actions. Sometimes the way were judged may cause people to get the wrong idea of us. Being constantly judged was a common thing in the city of Maycomb back in the 1930’s, where almost every white person was racist or discriminated the blacks. Tom Robinson was a victim to discrimination and later on lost his life for a crime he hadn’t committed. When people are perceived this way it has the ability to change people’s lives forever.
Is integrity really being pursued as it is supposed to? In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, this topic of justice is mentioned multiple occasions. The main character, Atticus, tries to solve a rape case. The defendant, Tom Robinson, is assumed as the rapist due to his race.
Francis, scout's cousin, says on page 110 chapter 9, “If Uncle atticus lets you run around with stray dogs, thats his own business, like grandma says, so it aint your fault. I guess it ain't your fault if Uncle Atticus is a n***r love besides, but i'm here to tell you it certainly does mortify the rest of the family-”. She proceeded to beat Francis up due to the insults. In response to Scout beating Francis up, her uncle wore her out but then listened to her part of the story and apologized since he heard her reason for punching
When children are in a conflict, parents should talk to their children about the situation before giving them a punishment. In To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, a young girl gets punished from her uncle. Scout Finch, an independent young girl, gets in a physical altercation with her immature cousin, Francis. Uncle Jack, Scout’s uncle, had recently told her she would get punished if he heard Scout use bad language again. When Francis started insulting Atticus, Scout’s father, and calling him terrible names, Scout got mad and started punching Francis.
Adults now hesitate when making punishments for kids because adults need to hear the truth before deciding the punishment. However, it was not always the case before when some adults did not value hearing the true story. A prime example of this is what Scout’s uncle did in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout Finch, is a loud and impulsive girl, who has gotten in trouble for swearing when she was specifically told not to behave in that manner.
Due to Scout punching her cousin, she gets in trouble with her uncle. Her uncle lets her explain after some time has passed, she finally explains to uncle Jack that her cousin was making fun of Atticus. In which she would not let happen right in front of her face. This proves that back in the day this would even pull families apart. Scout hated how people would talk about Atticus, and it was even worse when her own cousin was talking bad about Atticus. Scout understood that she should not have
Communication is Key Disciplining a child correctly can be a tough call to make, especially when the whole story is not relayed. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout Finch’s father, Atticus, and her Uncle Jack have to figure out how to punish Scout after she gets into a physical altercation with her cousin, Francis. When Christmas rolls around every year, Scout always goes to visit her family. The problem is, she does not get along with her cousin Francis well.
She doesn’t tolerate people ridiculing Atticus and fights most everyone she can over it. At Christmas, Cousin Francis says Atticus is ruining the family. Scout responds by punching him: “This time, I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth” (Lee 112). This quote shows Scout is not afraid to stand up for what she believes is right.
Beating a child as a form of consequence or punishment is considered wrong by so numerous people nowadays; however, that was not always the case. Scout, a young schoolgirl, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, lives in Alabama in the 1930s. During this time period, there was often social inequality for those of color. Scout’s father Atticus, is a lawyer. He is taking on a case defending a man of color.
After the rest of the family found out about Scout’s violent actions towards Francis, her Uncle Jack decided to take matters into his own hands. Scout did not deserve
