The case of Tom Robinson and how it’s a much broader problem in society
Although the 1965 Voting Rights Act marked the end of the Civil Rights Movement and the full integration of African Americans into society. There are still countless violations, injustices, and cases of racism toward minorities. There are measureless examples of Police brutality, purposeful segregation of minorities, and racism with employment and wealth. And how simply creating stricter regulation and laws in work environments, school environments, and in law enforcement can help to fix the problem. In relation to the book To Kill A Mockingbird the unfair treatment could be because of the color of their skin. Tom Robinson was accused of rape by a white woman, he was given the verdict of guilty although there was a lot of evidence proving his innocence as well as breaking and finding holes in the plaintiff’s story. There are many problems regarding race that affect many people whether it be for the better or worse. Unfair treatment is all too common between police officers and minorities. In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill A Mockingbird, Injustice is carried out through the story proving it to be a significant theme. In Harper Lee’s novel, injustice is carried out by the Jury pronouncing Tom Robinson guilty, when he is innocent. When Scout shuts her eyes,Judge Taylor polls in the jury, which says “Guilty ...Guilty...Guilty”(282).Not only did he not rape her, he helped her. Tom simply helped her with the chiffarobe,so his verdict is unfair.
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, we can see a clear example of injustice in the court. Equality is needed in all places no matter the person. People need to find a way to stop racism. Throughout time people have been put into slavery and have been neglected. There is injustice in this book because he is accused of someone else’s doing, is not given a fair hearing, and is attacked even though there was no evidence.
Injustice for African- Americans in the 1900’s occurred consistently even after slavery had ended in 1865. “The Murder of Emmett Till,” and the Tom Robinson case in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” show how African Americans experienced injustice. Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy from Chicago, Illinois that traveled to Mississippi to see relatives. It was there that Carolyn Bryant accused Till of whistling and verbally assaulted her.

Adrianna Cirillo Mr. Moriarty Freshman Literature and Composition 9 June 2023 The Injustice in our Justice System There are times when society is built upon unfair principles and the idea that some groups must prosper over others. This unfair system is exactly what Harper Lee tackles in her book To Kill a Mockingbird, as well as Bryan Stevenson in his book Just Mercy. Lee’s book is set in the secluded town of Maycomb in Alabama, sometime around the 1930s. It follows the life of Atticus, a lawyer, and his two children Scout and Jem.
Every day, there are good people that get hurt for actions they never committed, but because they are different they don't get treated the same way which makes them serve a punishment they never did. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, there are a lot of different types of prejudice. Consequently, a lot of people suffer from it like Tom Robinson, who experiences racism and problems in the legal system which ended up in him being killed. During this novel, Tom Robinson is a really nice man who helps everyone and cares about others, but because of racism, he got his life taken away from him even if he is innocent. This is why this makes him the biggest victim of a Mockingbird.
The lion is referred to as the "King of the Jungle" in the chain of life. The lion, who is superior to all other animals, is at the top of this hierarchy, and the teeniest insect is at the bottom. This cycle of life appears innocent and natural. Unfortunately, humans experience life differently. For example, discrimination against people for their race or ethnicity or in other words racism.
Discrimination The legal system, prior to the 1970’s, was flawed. The American court system is meant to be the epitome of equal treatment and justice. However, for black Americans, being put on trial was inevitably going to be an undesirable and unjust outcome. This is partially due to the fact that juries consisted of white men.
Many know that awful feeling when receiving an unfair punishment as a kid. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the narrator, Scout, is lectured by her father, Atticus, not to be involved in any more fights. Later on, when Scout is with her cousin, Francis, she hits him in response to his repetitive name-calling regarding her father. Before she could explain why she did what she did, her uncle spanked her. Scout was not punished fairly after the fight with Francis because she was not given a chance to explain.
Current Racism in America The Civil Rights movement brought segregation to a general close but many people have the illusion that it ended all racism when in actuality, racism is still very much a problem in this country even though it is kept under wraps and disguised. It only keeps progress from occurring and limits the social progression of a society that is expected to be great. Denial of the issue doesn’t mean it does not exist. While men and women of all colors can now drink from the same fountain, they are not safe from institution discrimination or even dirty looks from their peers.
All around America justice is said to be brought to everyone, and everyone has the right to a fair trial, but this is not the case for a falsely accused man named Tom Robinson. In the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the story takes place during the Great Depression, meaning that racism is still a common thing in many places, including Maycomb. The father of Jem and Scout, Atticus is a lawyer who is forced to take a case defending a black man of being accused of rape. Since Atticus has no choice whether is able to take the case or not, he knows that the outcome will be the same no matter what due to Tom Robinson’s race. This problem is the climax of the story due to the injustice that Tom has to deal with during his case.
Eric Garner is just one of the many people caught in the crossfire of this terrible problem, and it is tearing this nation apart. It shows that everything is not right, and that we are not done with black oppression. The Tom Robinson and Eric Garner cases address a prevalent issue in America modern society: racism. Was Eric Garner a victim of racist oppression or a police mis-read of the situation?
“Justice without force is powerless; force without justice is tyrannical” Blaise Pascal. How can one know right from wrong when their opinion is influenced by others? Biases, injustice, and oppression towards black people in our society and criminal justice system have killed and ruined the lives of millions of innocent African Americans. Power does not give you the right to act unjustly. Our Justice system saw African Americans as criminals.
The people of color are often ignored and forgotten by everyone until something happens and they get the blame. They are targeted without reason, and always fall victim if they are even the slightest involved. Tom Robinson unfortunately had an all white jury on his trial, this jury did not care about evidence, they just put him away because he is black. Going against an all white jury as a colored person and with the best lawyer around, you would still lose, if you are in this part of the world. Juries being racist or biased in the 1930s, was a big problem to those who were affected by it; just like Tom Robinson.
Compassion and understanding refer to the deep sympathy and grief for others when they encounter misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the pain, as well as the psychological process of comprehending. Thus, in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee demonstrates the theme of needing compassion and understanding from the audience through events that the main characters experience that force readers to reflect upon their own society and see how the social issues of Maycomb are still prevalent today and conclude that without compassion and understanding for others, we cannot take action against these issues, so the cycle of prejudice and injustice continues. Throughout the novel there are several prejudice and racist events
