What is an American? Coming from a family that traveled illegally from a different country to America it has shown me that the United States has a better opportunity and giving choices for a better life. An American is someone that has opportunity, freedom, and who can be patriotic. From my perspective an American is to have the right to be free, having an opportunity for education, work, having my own choices, to speak on my own word, take risk and many more. Another being American means to being united as one. In Langston Hughes’s poetry, “Let America Be America Again”, he explain patriotism from his perspective. “The land that’s mine--the poor man’s, Indian’s Negro’s, ME who made America, whose sweat and blood, whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain, must bring back our mighty dream again.” Some examples of being patriotic for me is standing up for the flag, voting, having belief in a religion. America is very special to my family and to myself, I can be Hispanic, Irish, Asian, Italian, African American, British and still be an American. Being an American is the greatest opportunity in the world and I wouldn't change it. Having opportunities gives me a chance to adventure, and see America’s beautiful landscape. Janurary 6 1941, Franklin D Rososevelt gave his historic State of the Union Address. It was titiled, Four Freedoms. His speech was centered on what he believed to be four fundamental freedoms that every nation should enjoy: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. Out of his four essential human freedoms my attention goes to freedom from want. FDR described freedom from want as an, “economic understanding which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitant anywhere in the world.”
In some of the pieces of literature like “I, Too, Sing America,” “America and I,” “The Bill of Rights,” and “Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty” the authors have different ideas of what it means to be American.
