Police Use Of Force Essay

Police officers use the amount of force necessary to ease the situation, arrest an individual, or protect themselves and others from harm. A certain amount of people understand that excessive force is required in different situations. There are moments when police officers will be obligated to use excessive force to calm the situation. For example; Rahtz said, “Then you have others who understand that in some situations, force is not only necessary but is required, if serious, injury or death is avoided” (Rahtz, 2007). It can be hard to prosecute a cop for these actions due to the constant state of threat a cop’s life is at while doing their job and the unpredictability of their job. An example of an case where the police’s use of force were questioned was the Wardlaw v. Pickett case. In this case a man named, William C. Wardlaw decided to sue the United States Deputy Marshals, William Pickett and Albert Crew. Wardlaw claimed that the two violated his constitutional rights by using excessive force on him and falsing arresting and prosecuting him.

Law enforcement agents are should behave to a standard that is greater than the average civilian. Police brutality comes from an abuse of power granted to the police. Police brutality is often drawn on by overreaction in certain situations drawn on by panic. Police using excessive force in the United States is a crucial dilemma and must be stopped.

Cop Brutality has been a growing topic in the news these last couple of years. It’s been getting so big that it’s made its way over to the entertainment world; such as the National Football League, where the star quarterback Colin Kaepernick from the San Francisco Forty Niners kneels to the National Anthem in means of protest. This is really how cop brutality got my attention even more so. First of all, the NFL should mainly be for entertainment purposes and not politics which is why Colins tactics made me think that the situation must be growing, and at a fast pace too. This is not good.

Militarization of police is an important modern concern within the criminal justice discipline. Many argue that the formation of special units within the police department has greatly aided in this militarization of police. These special units, including the Bomb Squad and SWAT Team, may contribute to the increased police force across the United States. Proponents of the militarization believe that police should use what they find suitable to protect the community and themselves from danger. However, opponents maintain that the cost to supply units with equipment is extremely high and that by arming police with military weapons breaks police-community relations.

Police officers have vowed their life to protect and serve. They risk their lives every day for their communities. As the last few years have sped past us, police officers have been very aggressive with the force they use when arresting a suspect, or even people in general. According to a Texas article on Civil Liberties and Civil Rights, “police officers typically use force offensively rather than defensively and do so with at least some degree of premeditation.” (Gross,2013, page 167).

More often than not, in police brutality or police misconduct, the abuse is more subtle than a torturing aspect. Sometimes, the officers will simply push limits and boundaries in order to recieve a statement from a witness. Similar to prosecutors, officers of the law are assigned the task of making sure our society is as safe as it can be. Occasionally, their determination to keep the city safe can sometimes lead them to crossing the line and abuse the power of their badge.

While officers can legally use physical and even deadly force under some circumstances, police have engaged in unjustified shootings, unnecessarily rough treatment, and severe beatings. The increase of police brutality has caused citizens

One common opinion is that officers should not use more force than is necessary or reasonable, and even then, that force should be used only as a last resort. “Police use force to affect civilians’ conduct. On a day-to-day basis, they do so most often by employing the least degree of force available to them, their mere presence. Cops wear uniforms and drive distinctly marked cars so that, without saying a word, they may have an effect on citizens’ behavior” (Fyfe, 38). When an officer’s presence fails to fulfill the desired conduct, the next course of action for said officer would be verbalization.

Officers abuse their power and most of the time get away with it which is not right, they are figures that the public trust to enforce the laws and keep them

The main goal of a officer is to gain control of situation, to protect and serve the community. So if they can 't regulate the problem, by using the low levels of force, then they simply must increase the amount of force. Also

For decades now, the controversy over deadly force has continued to show up in the news when police officers have acted in a manner that some citizens find just while others deem completely unfair. Many lawsuits stemming from shootings and crimes have found their way to local courts or the Supreme Court to deal with this issue. A portion of the U.S. population finds deadly force unnecessary when non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray or batons just as easily subdue the criminal. In addition, these citizens argue that officers might be liable for cases filed against them if they use excess force on people that seem suspicious but have not actually committed a crime. Police deviance is something that isn’t particularly talked about in the open. The reactions to certain actions by the police are either kept under wraps or blown up in the media to a dramatic extent. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the negative side of police deviance and the repercussions that follow. This will allow some light to be shown on the actions of officers that don’t follow the rules that they set out to uphold. If the peacekeepers aren’t keeping the peace, then the reasoning for having a position of power is null.
