Mountain Men went into the Louisiana Territory during the early 1800s and they trapped beavers for the hides and fur. They traded the hides and furs for goods that they needed to live in the mountains like: salt, tobacco, lead, powder, knives, whiskey, traps and sugar. Some Mountain Men took Indian brides and lived part of the year with the tribe. Their life was often lonely and it could be dangerous.
The War of 1812 was a military conflict between Great Britan and the United States. It lasted roughly two and a half years, and was not an utter bloodbath, nor did it affect anything economically or territorial. Despite there not being a true victor of The War of 1812, the Americans proved to European nations that America was it’s own striving nation, and able to sustain foreign attack. Besides the two large nations, the only losers were the Native Americans residing east of the Mississipi River such as the Shawnee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa Tribes. In the pivotal years of America’s development, all that the Americans wanted was to expand west, this led to Native American repulsion towards the white settlers.
22. In 1812 America and Britain went to war. Leading up to this time was a point of bloodshed, belligerent acts, and again political issues. At first the United States was not ready for combat. Although we declared war on Britain we were not equipped for such an extensive battle.
The English colonists on Roanoke Island lived in homes near native villages, but after vanishing without a trace, they are now called the Lost Colony. When John White finally returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, the English colony had vanished, and he allegedly found the words 'CRO ' and 'CROATOAN ' carved on two trees. When White saw that, he thought that the colonists got help from the Croatan Indians on Hatteras Island. The Croatans were peaceful and friendly with the settlers, so the English could have a good relationship with them when the colony was established in 1587. There are many theories about what happened to them: one of them is that they managed to integrate themselves with the Croatan people.
¨Wingfield and Kendall, living in disgrace strengthened themselves with the sailors and other confederates to regain their former credit and authority, or at least such means aboard the pinnace, to alter her course and to go for England.¨ In this essay, we will see that Jamestown and Plymouth are two very different colonies. They live in different places, have different reasons for settling, and probably have many reasons for them to come settle where they decided to settle. And yet, they also have similarities that bring them closer together because they mostly came from the same time of place looking for something. Even though these colonies have similarities and differences, they both still exude qualities that make them unique.
Throughout the Age of Exploration, trade and colonialist desires ruled the world. After Christopher Columbus's journey to the New World in 1492, the Columbian exchange progressed rapidly, bringing enormous changes to both the old and new worlds. Despite the positive contributions such as horses and new types of food, the Columbian exchange also brought a multitude of illnesses including the deadly smallpox (1). Although Thomas Bailey argued in the American Pageant that the “Black Legend” is inaccurate, it is clear that the devastation brought upon the Native Americans proves its accuracy through the erasure of identity, the spread of epidemics, and the immoral crimes that the Spaniard colonialists committed against the native population.
Although the Pony Express didn’t last very long, it still had a huge impact in the time of the 1860’s. Between January and March of 1860, William Waddell, William Russell and Alexander Majors established the Pony Express. It was called the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company. They then had to chose two places to set up at. Out in the east St. Joseph, Missouri and out in the west Sacramento, California.
Jamestown was the first successful English New world colony it was undertaken by adventurers and commercial entrepreneurs known as the Virginia Company of London in 1607. Jamestown was established after several earlier failed attempts by the English, notably the Roanoke colony, which was an attempt at settlement during the reign of Elizabeth I. The fate of the Roanoke colony remains somewhat of a mystery. Upon his return with supplies for the colony after a four-year delay due to the Anglo-Spanish War, John White, its governor, found the colony abandoned. The Jamestown colonists like those of Roanoke were woefully unprepared for the rigors of settlement in the New World.
The war of 1812 is the fight between British and United states. This war was last up to 32-month including their allies which result in no geographical changes. However, there are some revolutionary issues remaining from the American War of independence. The main reason why I think the War of 1812 was the benefit for the United States is, it recovered self-confidence and faith in the ability of its military power to fend off the nation's honor and freedom.
The first colonists of New England were driven by religious reasons; the settlers were devout Puritans. Their religiousness helped develop New England. John Calvin’s followers, called Puritans wanted to purify and reform the Church of England. The Puritans took their inspiration from Calvinism; they lived their lives of strict devotion. In addition, the Puritans valued their community, where everyone within the community must care for one another.
