2.a) The school Governors are volunteers who ensure a school is run efficiently, they work with the school to deliver good quality education, they set the schools aims and policies whilst working with the head teacher. They also make sure the schools budget is spent correctly and the building is being run well and safely.
1.1 Describe how a learning support practitioner may contribute to the planning, delivery and review of learning activities.
Teaching assistants work in a variety of situations. Sometimes they work with the whole class, sometimes they work with individuals or groups of children. It is important that whichever role we take on we are fair to other children balancing the support needs of the individual with that of the rest of the group. For example if you are working with a particular group and a child from another group asks for help, you would not necessarily ignore the other children. Focus your behaviour on the group you are allocated but not at the detriment of others.
By helping children gain the ability to use language they can help children gain confidence and self-esteem I have seen this in my setting with children who have had communication and language needs. These children have gained confidence and their language is now at a level that they can interact with other children and not show frustration. This is because they can now express themselves.
The target child of this observation is Sofi. She attends full day childcare at The Little Skool-House International @ Tampines Junction. Sofi has been attending the preschool since she was two years old. She also has a younger sister who is currently two years old and attends the same preschool.
The virtual field experience video is an insightful way to determine the effectiveness of a particular teaching practice. This video allowed me to also analyze the content of the lesson and the characteristics of students whom the lesson was taught. I was then able to look at the student population and teaching method to determine best teaching practices that was used by this Dr. Bear. In reviewing the video on Dr. Bear and conducting a task analysis sheet on the content of the lesson itself, I was able to follow the teaching practice, which appears to be aimed at determining from onset the developmental level of the students as well as their general knowledge of the lesson to be taught. This is achieved by allowing the students talk amongst themselves and share information freely and then input the pertinent information related to the lesson on a chart.
For children and young people to develop positive relationships it is crucial for adults to model effective communication in the classroom.As a teacher or teaching assistant, you have the platform to facilitate social learning and lead by example.
Lynsie and I went to Washington Irving Elementary School every Thursday this semester from 8:45 until 9:45 in the mornings. While at the school, we worked with a first-grade student named Reid.
I would start by introducing myself to all the parents and ask them what they would like to learn about or if they have any questions on what literacy is. I would tell them how valuable education is and that we need to pass on that value to your children. (Diane M Barone/Marla H. Mallette, 2013). We are going to provide home activities for you as parents to do with your child. This will help build your child’s literacy skills and we will have goals and structure for your child. (Diane M Barone/Marla H. Mallette, 2013). I want you as parents to be a full partner in your child’s education. One of the activities you will be doing with you is a shared book reading. The book I am sending home for you to read together is Pete the Cat and it will be in both English and Spanish which is some of your native language. You can also go to the library and get a library card and check out English and your native language there. (Diane M Barone/Marla H. Mallette, 2013). We are going to track how many words your child can read in this book. We will send a few words that are in Pete the Cat book and we will be reading them and your child will be able to recognize them. Children will be able to recognize a few words in different books. Parents will play a word game with their child called forming and recognizing rhyme. The children will read a DR. Seuss book
The different aspects of children's development are interlinked and co-dependent, so they will each be important to the child's holistic development. Children's overall development and educational needs will be affected by the way in which they develop in key areas. As children grow and pass different milestones or key points, they will gradually become more independent and less reliant on those around them in preparation for the future. The three key areas of children's development are personal, social and emotional, physical, and speech and language development-the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework refers to them as the three prime areas, (speech and language
I have been lucky enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and am aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My own passion for working with young children extends from my desire to emulate these role models and perform the same inspirational function in the lives of my students.
English-language learners (ELLs) with special needs belong to a minority group and require specific direction for educators on how to help these students in the school context and how to help to improve their educational outcomes. This is one of the most important topics in the field of education in the USA. The main issue of the teachers is to decrease the achievement gap between ELLs and their peers. Though, the educational needs of ELLs are diverse and rather complicated. English language learners face many obstacles due to their cultural and linguistic diversity. Meanwhile, ELLs with special needs have additional obstacles that influence their education such as cultural and linguistic differences as well as disabilities. Consequently, it is quite difficult task for educators to teach such children.
Lenses on Reading:An Introduction to Theories and Modelsis an excellent read. The authors bring a lot of useful information to not only the field of education but to the classroom. Throughout the book, the authors provided vignettes to show theoretical models in action which gives the reader a visual of how the theoretical model can be applied. The layout of the chapters was in chronological order which is was also helpful. The layout shows the reader the development of literacy theories from Early Theories and Models Applicable to Reading through the 21st century. It was interesting to see some of the theories overlapping each other and some of the theories were developed upon by other scholars. For example, the Schema Theory was developed further by Louise Rosenblatt’s Transactional Theory.
As children read they use several strategies that allow them to consider information from different sources to construct meaning. These sources of information are broken into three groups known as the cueing systems. These cue systems are semantic, language, and graphophonic. Semantic Information signifies the meanings in the text and in the mind of the reader. It includes word meanings, subject-specific vocabulary, figurative language and meanings presented in images (G. Winch, p32 2010)". Children will often use these cues when they are considering ideas, information, and feeling in the text. Semantic information aids them to call on their previous knowledge to read fluently and comprehend the text. When a reader can link a new text to everything
An individual with a reading disability demonstrates difficulties in reading skills that are unexpected in relation to age, cognitive ability, quantity and quality of instruction, and intervention. The reading difficulties are not the result of generalized developmental delay or sensory impairment (Lundberg, I., & Hoien, T. , 2001)
