In this short essay I will explain how we can tell the division of daylight and darkness on the right side of the globe in figure 1-4 is the sunset line, and how we know the phases of the moon are not caused by the earth’s shadow.

In figure 1-4, we can tell that the division of daylight and darkness on the right side of the globe is the sunset line, based on the continent we see in the image. In the image you can clearly see that it is North America, and the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. That division is on the eastern side of the globe making that the sunset line (The Solar System 7th ed page 3).
