Kids will get up early to go to school and still feel sleepy because they're sleep-deprived and that can affect how they perform in school. I think they should keep the Later start because it is more beneficial for them to start school later and get the rest we need to learn. Nearly two years ago the Montgomery County leaders voted to start the school day later so that kids could get the sleep that they needed to function during the school day.
Students sleeping hours are diminishing do to school starting times. You need to be in class by seven thirty or risk getting detention. Even though this panic feeling of being late and tired is all too familiar to most teenagers if not all, many schools still have starting times before seven thirty and don’t realize that it greatly affects the amount of sleep a teenager gets resulting in lower test scores. Should Schools Have Later Start Times? It is the beginning of the school day and eyes are drooping because of the lack of sleep. The National Sleep Foundation says, “The roots of the problem include poor teen sleep habits that do not allow for enough hours of quality sleep... and a clash between societal demands, such as early school start times” (1). Could this problem be solved already if school start times were later? A regular school start time is around 8:00 A.M.
More sleep will cause the kids to be more awake and aware in classes and so they can focus on their studies instead of focusing on trying to stay awake because they didn’t get enough sleep. In paragraph 4 it states,”Negative effects of sleep loss include impairments in mood, attention, memory, behavior and executive function.” This shows how kids in school with lack of sleep are really affected by this and will cause them to lose focus on their studies. In all, school is just better later. In conclusion, it will just be better for students to be able to start school later because it will benefit them more. Starting school early will not just be better for their grades, but to just be more awake and aware in their classes.
Most districts already have staggered start times for the schools and they report that delaying the high school start time would have a domino effect on all the schools which would become a disaster. Teens may be more likely to get the recommended amount of sleep. A delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep/wake cycles. Teens may be less likely to depend on caffeine to stay awake during the day. Sleeping longer could reduce health-related issues that accompany sleep deprivation.
This means that going to bed early does not necessarily mean that it gives a better sleep. This is why schools should start later as it helps students greatly and allows for better performance from both the awake students and the staff.
