This book was challenged because of sexual scenes and vulgar language. I do not think this book was reasonably challenged because there are so many other books with more vulgar language and sexual scenes than this book. I think it was unfair to challenge this book. Also none of the sexual scenes or language is that excessive or graphic. I think it is okay for this book to remain in the high school library.
The announcement of a new, censored, version of Mark Twain’s classic, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn sparked controversy across the United States regarding which version provides the better educational experience. Even though the revised publication may be more politically correct in the present day, it dampens the milieu of the story. Additionally, the argument for censorship in the novel is weak considering the social discomfort created from word ‘nigger’ can be used to form an educational lesson or discussion. The original edition of the novel provides would be a better a inclusion to an educational curriculum because it includes improved syntax when compared to Alan Gribben’s publication.
The book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is one of the most challenged pieces of literature in school systems today. Challenged meaning, being the subject of debate on whether or not it should be banned. The reason for the challenge is largely due to the profanity that finds its way into the story. This raises many questions as to whether or not this profanity should be exposed to children or endorsed by the school system. Although the use of profanity in the book Of Mice and Men may lead to dangers of children using those bad words more frequently, the use of it in the story allows teachers to explore the use of profanity and its effect on the english language. Furthermore, restraining a child’s exposure to that language may hinder that child’s interaction with the world outside of academics.
What could be so terrible about a book, that it has become one of the most frequently banned/challenged books? Of Mice and Men is a fictional book written by John Steinbeck in 1937. The book has been banned in many schools due to racism, profanity, foul language, violence, treatment of women, and for seemingly promoting euthanasia. This book is usually read by high school students around the age fourteen or fifteen, however many parents have gotten upset when hearing about what their kid was reading. Many parents have stated that this book is not age-appropriate and should not be read in school. However, in my opinion this book should not be banned.
This book should not be banned even though it portrays so many violent moments because it shows us the horrible reality of racial prejudice and discrimination. The Jews had to go through terrible things. For example, Elie “didn’t know that this was the moment in time
The captivating story of Ponyboy Curtis and the rivalry between the greasers and the socs has been praised and loved by many for years because of its accurate depiction of what it's like to be a teen, unfortunately this novel has been banned by many schools across the country. The Outsiders should not be banned at Astoria High School. This novel should not be banned because teens are mature enough to handle any mature content this book has, it is a classic book that many enjoy and that students should be able to experience, and banning this book is unnecessary censorship and pushes beliefs onto others.
They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. In my opinion, teachers should be permitted to teach these questionable book to their students. If an author's work was to be tampered with I feel as if many books will lose their value and or the meaning the author was trying to convey. Many of these “banned books” were written based on the time period it was wrote about.Banned books also can teach us history, social skills, vocabulary , and a new way of thinking. Many of these”banned books” are classics in
Some people say that racial slurs are why they ban some books, but most kids are gonna learn about racial slurs in their social studies class anyway. So why not let them better prepare themselves by reading a more challenging and mature book.
The book sheds a tear as it is banned by administration for students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned for summer reading for incoming sophomores because of its “explicit” content. After high school, out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you. You must experience life and all that comes with it. Just because a book that was written many decades ago may have bad words in it, doesn’t mean that it should be withheld from the students. Additionally, the educational value of, The Catcher in the Rye would be totally lost if a book is banned just for containing “explicit” language.
“Although Of Mice and Men is a literary classic, it is also a frequently banned book in many schools and libraries in the United States. This book has been either banned or challenged for over twenty years from a variety of different schools and libraries. I think Of Mice and Men should not be banned, but instead be taught in EVERY school, with responsible and mature teachers.” says jmonkey1080 at http://www.teenink.com/opinion/school_college/article/534583/Should-Of-Mice-and-Men-Be-Banned-Worldwide/ .This is how I belive people should react when they see the book “Of Mice And Men” by John SteinBeck If you harm others there are consequences that you have to face they might not be as bad as in the book. This teaches kids how to use proper language while speaking to others. The rest of this essay is about why, “Of Mice And Men” should not be banned from schools.
Censorship is an extremely debated topic in America, with people saying it contradicts with what the Bill of Rights has allowed the American people and how it may deny people use the Freedom of Speech. Yet, the censorship of books in American public schools is one of the most controversial topics today because of the use of racial slurs in classic literature, this is the case with To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Opinions on this topic vary, with some of them being: schools should have the right to censor books because they have racial slurs in them, schools should have teachers open up a conversation about race and the use of racial slurs with these books, or schools should not have the right to censor any book. I firmly believe that schools
The n-word might be offensive to some people, but if that word is changed with other words or the book is banned because of that word, the issue of censorship raises. Any type of art is about expressing ideas without boundaries, and censorship might take away the opportunity of reading a great piece of literature in schools. If an author wants to reveal racism in society, “[he has to] show racists as they are, speaking as they would speak” (Fishkin). Mark Twain had to use the n-word and show the conditions as they are to reveal the true racism. As Fishkin says, “the difference between the almost right word a[n]d the right word is really a large matter”, and changing the word still creates censorship. The use of the book in classroom as it is, can educate all the students, not African Americans, about the conditions of slavery.
“ QUOTE THING INSERT HERE”. This quote exactly describes what is happening here; both these books are classics and have taught many people many things. Even though many people don’t use the dictionary as a leisure book it still is a book that can be learned from just like “Call of the Wild”. Also Call of the Wild” won the Newbery Medal in 1931. Banning a book that has won a Newbery Medal is like banning a movie that won an Oscar. It just makes no sense to take something that got recognized for how great it is and then not let anyone see it or read it. It’s a shame it really is that they will ban a book just because of one or two people's complaints. Some may say that it doesn't matter how good the book is but if the content is inappropriate then it should not be read, but they are wrong. Really the appropriateness of the content doesn't change the quality of the
Writers have the freedom to write whatever they want and that is a part of the First Amendment, so why banned their book? “The First Amendment allows individuals to speak, publish, read and view what they wish, worship (or not worship) as they wish, associate with
In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, legality is often deemed less important than morality in terms of decision making. Multiple characters throughout the novel disregard the law in order to carry out their vision of justice. When Curley, the son of the ranch owner, discovers his wife’s body, he is furious. So furious that he plans to track Lennie, a new employee with an intellectual disability, down and murder him to get revenge for his mistake. Regardless of the law, Curley’s morals based on vengeance and masculinity drive him to kill Lennie. George has very different morals based on protecting Lennie, his travel companion and friend. His ultimate goal of helping Lennie leads to him ending Lennie’s life in order to prevent his suffering at the hands of Curley. The concept that morality takes precedence over the law in certain cases is manifested through the decision of Curley to hunt Lennie down and the decision of George to end Lennie’s life in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
