Of Mice and Men In modern schools and English classrooms, books are read and studied as a way of better enhancing students’ knowledge, and spreads the culture throughout a society, among many other reasons. However, many books can become controversial in schools and libraries based on the sensitive content they contain, for a variety of reasons. Books are often censored due to bad language, drug or sexual related references, or racial or religious preconception. Parents, guardians, and teachers are often times the ones challenging these books, for the sake of their children or students. This is an American novel published in 1937, told in third person objective style writing, that follows two characters, George and Lennie, whom are West Coast migrant workers seeking to find work in order to maintain a life for themselves. The two men are complete opposites, physically and mentally, and don’t always work well together, largely in part of their differences and arguments. Both George and Lennie have big, unrealistic dreams for peasant workers, with a long road of challenges ahead of them. Through much journey and difficulties, including Lennie accidentally killing a girl, George ends up shooting and killing Lennie, and lies about it, saying it was suicide. George apparently did what he thought he had to do, seeing no other way to handle Lennie in part of his long struggles throughout the story. The ending is jarring, yet truly focuses in on the themes of hopes, mistakes, and isolation. Because students are not shown adult themes in books that are banned, they will not understand situations that may happen in real life. “‘If we’re preparing our young people to be adults’ Blasingame said, ‘then they’re ready to read about adult subjects’” (ASU professor). Books allow children to learn about adulthood and what to expect, and if that is taken away from them, they may have a harder time learning about how to react to situations as adults. Also, school is a system in which students prepare to grow up and become adults, and shielding them from the real world can negatively impact their mental growing process into adulthood. “We want kids to read about these adult situations before they face them in person” (Blasingame, ASU). By having children read more mature books, with tough situations that may not be ‘appropriate’ for classrooms, they are better prepared for what is to come later in life. By doing this preparation, they will be more well-suited to deal with situations in the right way, rather than being clueless with what to do and say. In the 21st century, many books are challenged and banned for their content, some of these include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451. Many of the reasons given for banning are the same. The reasons include violence, language, symbols, and religion. This makes it very difficult for educational professionals; which books should be taught and which ones should be banned, when does protection become unnecessary censorship? Although Fahrenheit 451 shows some dark themes such as banning books, disregard for human life, and suicide, it should be included in the school curriculum because it shows the dystopian future that awaits the world if the events in the book become a reality.
Book banning has become an ignorant and anti-progressive practice, most frequently seen in schools, often in an attempt to ‘protect’ children from certain ideas or concepts they are likely already familiar with.

Have you ever gotten attached to one book in the library in your school, went back to check it out and found that it was banned? That situation sounds upsetting, but what if there was a good reason for the ban? Book banning is a type of censorship that has specific books removed from libraries. The discussion on whether this practice has benefited or damaged the literary society has existed for just as long, and it is a very strong debate. That altercation has a special emphasis on children’s literature and development.
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
Ironically, Fahrenheit 451 is one of the most banned books in American schools. The book was seen as evil for ideas like opposing the suppression of freedom by parties that presumed they had all the answers. Books such as Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Brave New World, The Giver, and The Hunger Games have been banned in schools, and they all explore the themes of suppressing freedom, information, and intellectual thinking. Prohibiting these books will only lead less thought; it will lead to the ultimate demise of society. If we do not learn from them, we will become them.
At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
“American citizens who care about the improvement of education are urged to join students, teachers, librarians, administrators, boards of education, and professional and scholarly organizations in support of the students’ right to read” (The Students Right to Read). Citizens should be allowed to stand up if they believe books should not be banned. It is important that writers should be able to have their books out to the public without getting banned. “Challengers often employ a definition that maintains that banning materials is the only true form of censorship,”(Knox 740). Censorship of books is common and a real problem.

This book has been either banned or challenged for over twenty years from a variety of different schools and libraries.
Every child deserves a proper education. Banned books are depriving students of a well rounded, culturally aware, literary education because of the culture that is discarded, the history that is being withheld, and the education that young people could get through these banned books. The point of history is to learn from it and learn from others mistakes, but how can we do that if we are not allowed to learn it. As teachers shouldn’t you be teaching us how to make judgment calls like understanding that Mark Twain was a racist, but a man of his time and that doesn’t change him being an amazing writer. We cannot learn things such as that if we cannot even read most of Mark Twain’s books.
