Eysenck extracted three super factors associated with personality. His three personality dimensions are extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. He regarded these three factors as part of the normal personality structure (Fiest et al., 2013, p. 405). Extraversion is one of the three super factors identified by Eysenck and consisting of two opposite poles-extraversion and introversion. Extraverts are characterized behaviorally by sociability and impulsiveness and physiologically by a low level of cortical arousal. They are likable, quick-witted, optimistic, and have other traits that are indicative of people who are rewarded for their association with others. Introverts, by contrast, are characterized by unsociability and caution …show more content…
Introverts can be described as quite, passive, unsociable, careful, reserved, thoughtful, pessimistic, peaceful, sober, and controlled. According to Eysenck, the principle differences between the two are not behavioral, but rather biological and genetic in nature. He believed that the primary cause of the differences is one of cortical arousal level, which is a physiological condition that is largely inherited rather than learned. Because extraverts have a lower level of cortical arousal, they have higher sensory thresholds and thus lesser reaction to sensory stimulation. Introverts are the opposite, high levels of cortical arousal, and low sensory thresholds thus they have a greater reaction to sensory stimulation. Introverts avoid situations that will cause too much excitement such as wild social events, skydiving, competitive sports, or playing practical jokes. The extravert will participate in activities such as mountain biking, driving too fast, and drinking alcohol (Fiest et …show more content…
High P scores indicate hostility, self-centeredness, suspicion, and nonconformity. People low on the psychoticism tends to be altruistic, highly socialized, caring, cooperative, conforming, and conventional. Eysenck hypothesized that people high on psychoticism have a high predisposition to succumb to stress and develop a psychotic disorder. People with low P scores are not necessarily vulnerable to stress-related psychoses and will resist a psychotic break even in periods of extreme stress (Fiest et al., 2013, p. 409-10). I feel as though I have traits that fall under both introvert and extravert. I am a social person and love to be surrounded by my family and friends. I think I present myself as likable, optimistic, adventurous, and out-going. But, I also possess qualities of an introvert. If I am in a social setting where I might not know a lot of the people there I can come across as quiet and reserved. I just need some time to soak in the setting and feel people out before I put myself out there. I would also consider myself a peaceful, balanced, and thoughtful
This would put his first area of the MBTI as an extravert. Sheriff Tate responds to Mayella and Bob Ewell’s and is confronted with allegations that Tom Robinson, a black man, sexually assaulted and beat Mayella Ewell. Sheriff Tate acts on these allegations by arresting Tom on rape charges without any incriminating or substantial evidence but rather based solely on the Ewell’s word. This to me shows more of an extravert’s actions rather than that of an introvert because he is acting based on others actions or the outside world rather than his own belief or inner
All throughout my life, people describe me as outgoing, eager, and sociable. I never went through that common mousy phase in my life because I was never around people that made me feel shy. I became more confident, humble, and well-rounded. I would not be the person I am today without that youth group. I’ve made life long friends that I know will be my bridesmaids for my wedding.
As a result, extroverts are more sensitive to rewards. When performing certain tasks, extroverts are better at handling multiple tasks whereas introverts sometimes becoming overwhelemd with large amounts of information - nevertheless, introverts are more likely to work harder on a problem they don 't understand unlike extroverts who give up quicker. This is because introverts and extroverts face a task differently. Introverts understand that rewards aren 't everything - instead, you have to look outside the immediate rewards and look for your flow - something you care about.
Extroverts will likely recognize the behavior described in their friends and family, and be reminded that while extroversion certainly has much to offer, so does introversion. This is a book that intends to improve all aspects of life through appreciation of diverse skills and tendencies, a book that simultaneously calls out the flaws in our culture and shows us the way to fix them. This is a book for everyone, loud or
Introversion takes the form of pondering “big-picture context” (Kroeger, 2002) and looking for meaning in everyday life. For myself, this description holds true, as I am a pastor by vocation, and tend toward study and theology as a means of understanding. I do not like large crowds and do not need to be the center
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.
An extrovert lives in the outside world. These people are perceived to be more bold and outgoing. An introvert, in contrast prefers to live inside their mind. They are seen as more quiet and shy. Jack shows the traits of an extrovert from the very beginning.
According to Jung, having an inclination towards being more of an introverted individual then extraverted, is when the person prefers to be more independent than social. I think that this indeed can reflect to one of my character traits. For instance, I tend to like spending more time either reading the Holy Bible, or listening to calm music in my room, instead of going out to party on Saturday nights. I believe that I could have probably been influenced by my mother, who would always be in her room reading the Holy Scriptures and she’s the one who introduced it to me , and would read it to me throughout my childhood until I was able to read it and understand it myself.
There have been large amounts of research which has been carried out in order to attempt to explain the causes of happiness, and a considerable amount has shown that extraversion is closely related (McCrae and Costa, 1980, Tamir, 2009). This report aims to look at The Five-Factor Model as a part of the Big 5 personality test,
In Susan Cain’s book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking she proves that introverts are vital to the world and everything typically thought of “the quiet ones” is wrong. She starts the book by introducing the idea of the introvert. This term is derived from psychologist Carl Jung who basically invented the personality test. When deciding on a name for different types of individuals, he called the more reserved people who gain their energy from being alone and are typically not very open introverts.
Carl Jung was the first guy who coined the terms ‘introvert’ and ‘extrovert’. In history, there have been many successful introverts like Steve Wozniak, and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss). Steve Woznick
The concept of personality has fascinated psychologists for years. Allport proposed the hierarchy of traits – cardinal, central, and secondary traits (Allport, 1945). Cattell also proposed his theory, the sixteen dimensions of human personality (Cattell, 1944). Jung developed a type-based theory of personality, with different dichotomous personality categories, which was further developed by Myers and Briggs in 1962 to produce the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Ford, 2013). Some psychologists have even argued that personality does not exist; that people change behaviour over time and across various situations.

Factor analysis of the data led him to conclude that people can be divided into two groups of neurotic and normal. Later, Eysenck (1970) expended these two factors into five: extroversion-introversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. With regard to his model, Griffiths (1991) claims that Eysenck’s model is favored amongst other possible models because it includes a well-defined classification in an unambiguous framework. In addition, it entails a theory that has produced an ample amount of research most of which have been supportive. Moreover, the instrument that is used to measure the model’s factors has been standardized in 35 different countries, some of which are located in Asia such as Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, and India.
