2. Literature Review
Facebook is a social networking service launched in February 2004 by a Harvard undergraduate named Mark Zuckerberg invented “The Facebook” as a way for his Harvard University classmates to communicate on the web (Phillips, 2007). As of June 2012, Facebook reported to have more than 1 billion users worldwide that post photographs, share feeling and update relationship statuses (Smith, 2009). Through extensive research in different studies, users of Facebook may be at risk of developing depression and anxiety. Kaplan et al. (1994) states that, in depression, thought content of the individual usually revolves around thoughts of loss, guilt, suicide and death. Furthermore depressed patients have suicidal thoughts and of those who have suicidal thoughts do commit suicide. Research has stated that the cognition of people with depression cannot be described in a linear way as all the components of their cognitions tend to reinforce each other in a circular way, that is low self-esteem intensifies the low mood, which in turn creates a negative view of the world and self, which in turn reinforces the low self-esteem. He dubbed this negative thinking as “negative automatic thoughts” (Beck 1976), as the thoughts seemed more spontaneous rather than as the result of deliberate thought. Through this essay, I will be discussing how the importance of our thoughts and behaviours are vital in understanding depression (Beck et al. 1979), the key components of CBT, and how negative automatic thoughts may influence our everyday lives. This paper analyzes the effects technology has on mental health. When overused, without face to face communication, one may experience anxiety and stress. A study from the American Phycology Association states that most teenagers use social media, teenagers are especially vulnerable to these effects because technology surrounds them in their day lives. When using social networking, or technology in general, while maintaining face to face socialization one can also sustain their health. However, she found a study by Ethan Cross (2013), a psychologist from the University of Michigan and his colleagues which argue that people who used Facebook will become unhappy. They wanted to find out how the use of Facebook can affect them. The support is objective because the author presents facts and clear evidence, for example research done by Robert Kraut (1998) found that more people used the Web, the lonelier and more depressed they felt. Nowadays, we are using social networking such as Facebook messenger and G-mail to talk someone quickly instead waiting mail for long time to receive. Since social media came around , there’s have been a decrease in real-life conversations , More people are building a relationship online and drifting away from the real world. It's starting to cause a lack of face to face communication. Teenagers don't even pay attention to the outside world or their surroundings when they’re on their phones. You get easily distracted when you are on your phone. Also technology causes you to miss out on your sleep and losing sleep have negative effects on your brain.
As the technology era change over time, the social media becomes an important part of our life. We use social media to connect with friends and family, also to found out the latest news or fashion trends. Especially after the great success of Facebook, many other social media follow along such as Snapchat and Instagram. Numerous young age children gradually sink into the virtual world of Social Media. According to the Pew Research Center survey, that majority of Americans use Facebook and YouTube, but young adults are especially heavy users of Snapchat and Instagram.
Social Media: Affects Relationships As technology progresses more and more, there have been great changes that have made our lives more easy and efficient. There are many advantages that technology has brought upon us, one in particular is the Internet. The Internet has allowed people to be connected quickly to information and be updated to the issues and happenings around us, but the social networks that have been invented to allow long distance connection have been resulting in negative outcomes for society and our generation. Social media gets in the way of building actual relationships, makes people become inauthentic about their lives and lowers their self-esteem, and has become a dangerous and threatening nature. In a modern world with the invention of social media, people can converse with someone using the internet and get a response within seconds. Although in the course of time all generations have started to take advantage of the novations that social media has brought about, teenagers and young adults are the most active users of these networks. According to numerous research studies in the area of online social networks, it has been shown that such sites are impacting the lives of the youth significantly. Understandably, there are a lot of different opinions about its positive and negative influence.
Social media has various negative impacts on the physical well being. Excessive use of social media can jeopardize our health. First of all, it should be mentioned that the Internet, for instance, takes time away: instead of morning exercises, one would rather read some new portion of news or check e-mail. People are always staring at their smartphones either for reason or for no reason at all. The most frequent health problems are thought to be those that are connected with vision and body posture.
Therefore, they’re more vulnerable to low self-esteem, mental illness and peer pressure. Social media can easily cause anxiety, sleep problems, depression, suicide risk and in particular body image within young people. How Do We Fight Youth Depression? In today’s world, depression is the first leading cause of adolescent suicides. It is a growing problem in our present society and is often a major contributing factor to one’s personality. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (of the US), one out of every four teenagers undergoes depression.
E.g. insomnia, irritability, procrastination and anxiety. “Individuals who engage in social media discussion fear that interaction with people will bring sense of self-consciousness, judgement, evaluation and inferiority. Often it leads to feelings of inadequacy, embarrassment and depression. In the US, Social Anxiety Disorder is the third largest psychological disorder, after alcoholism and depression at 13-14 % of the population. As an emerging trend in a technologically depended society, social media anxiety also includes the symptoms appear in social anxiety disorder.”
Thus, social media just offer limited meeting. Psychologist, Aric Sigman says, “The use of social networking sites as opposed to face-to-face interaction could lead to major health problems.” He also claimed in the British Journal: The Biologist, “Spending too much time online could lead to social isolation, loneliness a negative outlook. These types of psychological symptoms could eventually lead to more serious health concerns, such as heart disease, cancer and
