Factors Affect Self-Confidence Level of self-confidence can show in many ways; through behaviors, body language and utterances. A self-confident person can only inspire confidence in others if he possesses sterling characters which in turn make him an “ethical exemplar” in the large society. According to Arthur Friedman, “People of genius are admired, people of wealth are envied, people of power are feared, but only people of character are trusted” Thus, self-confidence requires conducting one’s life as if a camera is beamed on him and a microphone is opened. The picture of self-confidence must be character-based and non-hypocritical. Integrity, humane, justice and equity should be watchwords. Trust is the most important factor in building personal and professional relationship. It is the “glue that binds followers and leaders together” and implies accountability, predictability and reliability. Breaking promise, inconsistency, withholding vital information and being two-faced are actions that can destroy the environment of trust necessary for self-confidence building. A self-confident person must strive to remain trustworthy and do what he believes to be right even if others mock or criticize him for it. His behaviour must not be governed by what others think. Listening to gossips will usually make him feel dissatisfied with his collogue and peers, therefore form a negative idea to an individual then to that organization. Gossiping usually leaves us feeling less worthy (low self-confident). Thus, self-confidence entails fixing one’s thought on what is true, good and right. Think on those that are pure and lovely and dwell more on the positive side of things or others. Self-Confidence Development Cycle Self-confidence is a judgment, based on weighing capabilities, abilities, motivation and all the resources that one can muster versus the requirements of the task at hand. Like any other judgment, it can be accurate or inaccurate. It is influenced by how well someone makes judgments, how accurate is the data that considered for judgments, and how it is processed. Self-confidence is based on perceptions, both on capabilities and the task or challenge, not on the underlying skills or the task requirements.
