A study done in Kenya, whereby in a school, they decided to put numbers to school factors influencing achievement. For us, having read this said review, we concluded that all the factors and theories discussed above have their percentage of truth; however it is not always the case. ‘...School should be provided with learning resources by the government and parents to facilitate. The school environment encloses the whole community and society as cited above. Our ability to live in society is what defines the genus of Homo sapiens being the most successful species on planet Earth. An idea of Dewey which we believe to be one of the reasons why we are successful species is our capability to live in society. No man can survive alone long. Every individual depends on each other for survival though sometimes indirectly. In economics we learn that suppliers take into consideration the societal needs and demand. Education also occurs in the mass. We depend on our society to have a good education. It is a well structured curriculum prepared by the leaders in education and followed by all students alike. Peer learning is also an attribute of society and inarguably peer learning has helped many to achieve success in education. “Dewey’s claim in Experience and Nature that the collection of meanings that constitute the mind have a social origin expresses the basic contention, one that he maintained throughout his career, that the human individual is a social being from the start, and that individual satisfaction and achievement can be realized only within the context of social habits and institutions that promote it. During our placement we have also found out that there are those highly intelligent students whom people affectionately or not call ‘nerds’ like to be left on their own, and will not share their knowledge with others. They are those students who will not care for the fact that the teachers have low or high expectations of them. Advantages to studying alone are that it minimizes distraction, allows you to pace yourself, and can improve your focus. When you are by yourself, distraction is minimized due to the lack of other interaction you have other than with your schoolwork. You can take breaks whenever you feel overwhelmed, or even read at a speed that suits you. This pacing of your own work can be extremely beneficial to you, for no one knows you better than yourself. Lastly, the improvement of focus that comes with studying alone is crucial. This lets you have the flexibility to learn different sections that you personally need improvement on as well as leave less stress on aspects you may have already mastered (DSST, 2016). As we say, you are never better served than by yourself. To master the linguistic ability sometimes it is better to be to yourself and being a product of society or not is not what will hinder achievement. Of course these are minority cases but still include around 15
