Divorce is common in the current society, and according to research conducted in the United State, almost 50- 60 percent of marriages whether fast or second marriages are likely to end up in divorce (Teachman, 2008). Many reasons put a marriage at a high risk of divorce that includes infidelity, lack of commitment, early marriages amongst many others. Some of the reasons leading to divorce occurrence in the first place can be fixed if only the two involved parties are willing to solve the problem in their marriage. Commitment is the most influential factor in any marriage as it helps the interested parties not to be overwhelmed by the marriage problems. It is the key element that keeps couples together

In the last five decades divorce has become common with the majority of divorces recorded in the 1970s to 1990s.although high divorce cases were recorded around this period, and the problem has decreased divorce cases are still high (Stevenson & Wolfers, 2007). Although divorce is not the ultimate solution to marriage differences especially when children are involved, divorce is necessary at times as it helps preserve the moral boundaries in the institution of marriage. Parents have a responsibility to do all the reasonable to sustain and maintain a marriage especially when in crisis. This research intends to explore the institution of marriage analyzing factors that cause and result to divorce in a marriage.

Factors that cause divorce

Multiple factors cause couples to divorce, and these factors do not necessarily mean a marriage will divorce, but merely increases the chance of divorce when they fail to get addressed.

Marriages are made to last, but the idea of divorce has changed the institutions it has become the common way out even without taking chances of trying to make a marriage work. Commitment is the overall denominator for any marriage to thrive. Problems will always come along in a marriage but when couples are committed to making the marriage a priority the marriage can work despite the intensity of the conflict. According to research, many couples would have wanted to remain married rather end up single or co-parenting if only the partners involved were committed to making the marriage work. Commitment is the defining factor to where the marriage is head which is either divorce or happy married
