I’m here to argue why we should choose the book The Odyssey and the article Bullying Epidemic: Facts, Statistics, and Prevention should be chosen for the new Baker Middle School book club. I’m going to be comparing these texts to show why people in Baker Middle School should be courageous. In the story The Odyssey the setting takes place in Troy because of a war. After they won the war they had to come back but they didn't praise the gods so they went through a lot of trouble. Most crew mates die trying to get back but Odyssey doesn't and comes home to see his wife. If you give this book to the book club then they will become more courageous and will face their fears and accomplish more. For example, when the text says “Odysseus is determined to hear the Sirens.” Also when it says “Go that way, crew! Row! Row! … That was the toughest decision I’ve ever made.”This shows that Odysseus is courageous because the sirens are very dangerous and he wanted to listen to them and take them on. This relates to bullying because Odysseus is courageous to take on the sirens just as kids should also be courageous to take on bullying: not to let it affect you. Odysseus also has to make a tough decision to get past the monster just as kids have to make tough decisions. This relates to bullying because you have to be courageous and make tough decisions dealing with bullying. This book should be used in book clubs because it shows how to be courageous which you need to do against bullying. Bullying Epidemic: Facts, Statistics, and Prevention should be used in the book club because it shows how to prevent bullying and how big of a deal it …show more content…
Some text to defend my claim is “Dealing with feelings of school safety, and specifically addressing school bullying.” The text also says that 90% of students in grades 4-8 report being harassed or bullied.” This shows that you need to report bullying when you see it and stick up for people and yourself. Also, this shows that most of the kids in school get bullied in grades 4-8. That's why kids need to be courageous and take when they see it to tell a trusted adult. This book should be used in a book club because it shows how to deal with bullying and that you need to be courageous to stand up to it and tell an adult if you see bullying. You need to be courageous in life when you're facing bullying, and these two books The Odyssey and Bullying Epidemic: Facts, Statistics, and Prevention show just that. That’s why I think they should add these books to the book club. Both of the books tie into being courageous because Odysseus is very courageous and defeats all of the monsters in his way just like how you should do with bullying. The other text also ties into being courageous because the text it tells you, you have to be courageous to overcome

Odysseus demonstrates his courage and strength of character in the first epic hero quality we see him portray. This is evidenced by his willingness to lock himself in with the cyclopes despite the danger.

Homer delivers very universal themes, such as loyalty is respected, but the epic also provides meaningful themes that are not as recognizable. In the Odyssey, Odysseus exemplifies the true meaning of being a leader through courage in the face of danger, which is shown by Circe, the Sirens, and the suitors. As a major problem in schools around the world, the issue of bullying must be addressed in order to keep students physically and emotionally safe. The act of bullying not only affects the well-being of the person being targeted, but it also affects the rest of the school community too. It can be difficult for teachers, principals, and superintendents to make an ethical decision about what to do when bullying occurs because there are misunderstandings about what bullying is, leading to the improper identification of situations.
Bullying in Schools What seems fun and harmless for some students, is painful and degrading to others. Bullying has been a critical issue around schools, but before it was not as dangerous and know as it is now. These do not means bullying was not happening, it means it was not taken into consideration by parents or teachers. They thought it was just peer pressure or a kids game, and sooner or later the kids would be friends again. At one point, bullies think it’s normal to be mean and abusive to other students.
Bullying is a widespread problem in our schools and communities and has a negative impact on students’ right to learn in a safe and secure environment without fear. It is a process in which one person repeatedly uses his/her superior strength or influence to mistreat, attack or force another person to do something (Van der Werf, 2014). Bullying or peer victimization is now recognized as a complex and pervasive problem (Beran, 2009). It is an ongoing problem that is not restricted by age, race, gender or class. This behavior generally takes one of four forms, physical such as assault, verbal which involves threats or insults, social which entails exclusion or rumor spreading, and cyber which includes aggressive texts or social network posts
Bullying Can Be Prevented Bullying is a form of violence to pick on victims because they are different from their bullies, have insecurity/jealousy or home problems. The hate towards their victim has something to do with the victim having an unusual gift or being intelligent the bullies has yet to become. It is important that this behavior should be prevented or it will become worse. Bullying is one of the main issues public and private schools have to face on a day-to-day basis. When the bully takes it too far, the victim snaps and retaliates by fighting him/her back physically or verbally.
