(MIP) This meme focuses on one of the key messages conveyed by the government in Fahrenheit 451, that books should be avoided and people should not read them. (SIP A) The Government trying to persuade people away from books, is a key implication in both, Fahrenheit 451 and this meme. (STEWE 1) When Clarisse McClellan encounters Montag for the first time, she seems to be hypnotized by the Salamander symbol on his jacket. As she starts to ask questions, she asks, “Do you ever read any of the books you burn ?” Montag responds, “That’s against the law !” (Bradbury 5) Montag is hypnotized by the society which causes him to consider reading books as something that will not bring happiness, and as something that will bring nothing but disgust. (SIP B) The reason for the banning of books is later explained by one of the novel’s key adversaries, Beatty, who demonstrates one of the society’s fallacies. (STEWE 1) The books are avoided and burned in order to prevent dispute. Beatty clarifies, “we must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against.” (Bradbury 56) The logic behind this is to keep everyone the same in order to avoid problems. (STEWE 2) The unrevealed part of this, in fact , is clearly a logical fallacy: they have deliberately confused an absence of controversy as happiness, avoiding the great number of evidence which indicates society is not happy. The government use the stack the deck fallacy by ignoring all pieces of evidence which would reveal this to the social members of the society.
