16. Montag feels horrible for what he did, it made him very uncomfortable. He wanted to be able to read, think and to find the hidden truth. He didn’t want to be a fireman who starts fires anymore; he doesn’t want to continue killing the authors.

The social commentary is in almost every dystopian title a person can come across. Moreover, one of the best examples is Fahrenheit 451. Fahrenheit 451 is in a way a reflection of Ray Bradbury’s childhood. The social commentary Ray puts into Fahrenheit 451 all comes from memories of his past time, it is a warning of the effects of censorship. Throughout Ray’s childhood, he has seen some of the worst possible censorship. For example, he lives through the times of Hitler’s leadership. He saw, as did everybody then and now the governmental censorship that Hitler threw at his people. He burned any religious books and this must of genuinely hurt Bradbury considering the fact that he is a believer in God. Ray spills all of this social commentary into his book.

In school, we are taught certain things that the schools’ want us to learn, but there are certain things they don’t teach us. Every person in this world, has the right to know about things and learn, whether it’s in school, or they teach themselves things that we aren’t taught in school. In the story, “Fahrenheit 451”, every person is censored and they aren’t allowed to read books, because the government does not allow them to, and there are firemen that burn all the books so no one will get a hold of them. He is 30 and married to his wife Mildred that is only with him because of his money and talent. He works for the fire department and scorches books for a living to keep knowledge out of people’s heads with a slight twist. The world sees him as a generally afraid person that is very insecure about what he does that Montag is a rebel that does not abide by the rules and does not do what he is told. Montag shows rebellion when he says “Didn't firemen prevent fires rather than stoke them up and get them going” (Bradbury, 5). In this quote, he realizes that what he does for a living is wrong and he should change his ways and do what a fireman is supposed to do. Montag contributes to the theme because he is the main character and he contributes to the theme by being the antagonist and being the main character.

He became a different person after he have left the society. It states, “Had he ever seen a fireman that didn’t have black hair, black brows, a fiery face, and a blue-steel shaved but unshaved look? These men were all mirror images of himself!” (pg 30). This shows that Montag was like everyone else. He represents a fireman and everyone one else that is a fireman. Since every man is made the same, that is why Montag and everyone one else at his work looks the same. Everyone will be conformed that looks like him will become a fireman in the future. Once he escaped from the society, he met Gregor and he said, “Walk carefully. Guard your health. If anything should happen to Harris, you are the Book of Ecclesiastes. See how important you’ve become in the last minute!”(pg 144). This shows that Montag has changed and that he wasn’t like everyone else, but he was his own person. He is the Book of Ecclesiastes and that everyone else in his past society is not like him

(SIP-A) The society is against books and will burn them and the possibly the person containing them if they are found. This is the scene where they have to burn the women with her books just because she had books. She chose to be burned with them because she loved the books that much. (STEWE-2) This quote proves that Montag has to hide his books or he will be in deep trouble, “Then he reached up and pulled back the grill of the air-conditioning system and reached far back inside to the right and moved still another sliding sheet of metal and took out a book” (62).This is the scene where Montag had to reach down his air conditioning system to grab his books.

The firefighters in this book burn books because the public thinks they are useless and a waste of space and time. For the most part, they burn books, but sometimes burn anything they really see. It was written by Ray Bradbury and first published in October 1953. In this novel, protagonist Montag changes his understanding in various aspects such as love or his human relationship throughout the book. However, among all of these, fire – the main theme of this novel – has the most significance as it also changes his understanding of knowledge from books. Bradbury portrays how Montag’s perception of fire and burning books with his personal development changes by the different choices he makes throughout the novel.
