“Fairy tales hold no value in the modern world. They are misleading, misguided, exist and unrealistic. They should be updated to reflect the reality of modern life or destroyed.” The words, “when you wish upon a star, dreams come true” were said by Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio. As a little girl watching this movie over and over and each time being longer than the last because the VHS tapes would stretch- I used to believe those exact words; but as I look back on the days where all I wanted to be was Aurora- Disney movies di not prepare me for the real challenges life has to offer. I agree that fairy tales should be remade to portray the modern world, as displayed in Tinnderella. In Cinderella, we are lead to believe that she is a passive girl who has no human friends although she does talk to mice. She wouldn’t last two hours in the modern world- she would be laughed at and shunned before she could find a big enough pumpkin to go home in. She is also seen as a damsel-in-distress and she can’t possibly save herself from her cruel step mother- so her only option is her knight in shining armour who whisks her away to live her new life in the palace. Although no girl I know has dressed like a man in order to prevent her father going to war; I associate Mulan with Malala Yousafzai. Malala is a Pakistani activist for female education in the Middle East. In 2012, she was on a school bus in the district of Swat, a gunman climbed on the bus and asked for her by name. Three shots were fired towards her, one hitting the left site or her forehead and traveled under her skin through the length of her face and another hitting her shoulder. She was sent to England where she made a full recovery. Malala had become an icon of hope for all girls in Pakistan because even with a gun to her head, she stood strong against the Taliban and became the youngest person to receive a Noble Peace
