To be afforded the opportunity for our heroes to attend and be treated, at little to no cost, for a wide range of ailments from the common cold, to a mental health disability, or for the possibility of a healing surgery is a well-deserved and a wonderful privilege. One of the major demographics of care providers within the VHA is the registered nurse. There are over 51,000 registered nurses nationwide, with 60.7% of the total population of providers of healthcare, within the VA hospitals, VA outpatient clinics and VA Patient Care Medical Homes (VHA, Office of Nursing Services, 2012).
Role of Family Nurse Practitioners: Case Study The shortage of primary care physicians has been a problem in health care system and will continue to the next decade due to increasing of aging population. According to National Governors Association (NAG) (2012), the growth of the aging population combined with the initiative of the Affordable Care Act, the problem of primary care providers shortage is worsening. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are educated and prepared to perform primary care services as physicians do. More importantly, studies showed that NPs’ role as primary care providers achieve equal or higher patient satisfaction rates (Evangelista et al., 2011, Albers-Heitner et al., 2013).
A thirty- seven year old nurse practitioner was working at an urgent care when a 23-year-old graduate student arrived. Complaining of fever, chest pains, and cough. He had a temperature of 101°F. He also stated that he had been unwell for the last couple of days. The nurse practitioner completed a brief examination of the patient, and gave a diagnosis of bronchitis. A prescription antibiotic was given. He was told to come back in a couple of days if he was not feeling better. The next morning friends found the 23 year old patient dead. Medical examiners identified that the young man died of myocarditis. Weeks later, the nurse practitioner found out about her patient when the urgent cared was being sued for negligent treatment. Discussion Post NURS 6531 Week One Nurse Practitioner Competencies Quality As we further our education to become advanced practice nurses (APNs), it is crucial that we understand the behaviors or core competencies expected of all APNs. For the purpose of this discussion, I will evaluate the core competency of quality and how I will integrate this behavior into my daily practice.
A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is a member of the health care team who provides quality and cost-effective care to patients across the lifespan, from newborn to old age. They provide care in various healthcare settings such as outpatient clinics, hospitals, community health centers and public health departments. They focus on disease prevention, health and wellness promotion. The FNP empowers patients through patient education and partnerships in clinical treatment decisions (Hamric, 2014; “Nurse Practitioner,” 2014). How does one become an effective Family Nurse Practitioner?
Nursing has become a very dynamic role as it is constantly changing and evolving. The number of people entering the nursing field continues to increase. The responsibilities nurses are held accountable for are very diverse and demanding. Mental health nursing is one of the many diverse fields a nurse must be educated in. A nurse must be competent in attending to a patient’s mental health as it is something that pertains to all patients regardless of race, origin, or religion. “There is growing recognition that health services must move beyond the responsibility of simply providing clinical and curative services to increasing attention on the benefits of promoting mental health and well-being” (Wand and White, 2007, p. 404). The role of Nurse Practitioner came into inception in the mid 60s. This was in response to a shortage of physicians across the nation. With the demand for primary care services for all ages, one option to close the demand gap and increase the number of providers is the option for states to revisit the laws governing how Nurse Practitioners practice and provide care to patients in different settings like hospitals, outpatient clinics and others. Whether they work autonomously or under a physicians' supervision, their scope of practice involves but is not limited to assessment and planning with a goal to provide the the best care for optimal patient health and outcomes.
The guidelines set by the NP’s Core competencies involves educational programs for nurse practitioner and are referred to as essentials behaviors for all NPs (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner, ([NONPF],2017). As a future NP, this course has echoed the importance to critically examine information given by finding evidence to support and manage care for the individual or the population, which I will apply to my practice. This, in turn, will offer better treatment plan and optimize better patient outcome. Using the differential diagnosis to pinpoint the best possible diagnosis for individuals has helped me to use critical thinking about my patient and to find the appropriate plan of care.
Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. Nurses interpret and evaluate diagnostic examinations to determine an individual’s condition, as well as making the necessary adjustments in patient treatment plans on their health progress.
They assess, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses as well as preventative healthcare for individuals and families. As their care is family-centered, they must also be able to understand the relevance of the family’s identified community. In addition to the nine essentials as outlined by the AACN, the FNP must meet competencies in advanced health assessment skills in order to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings. They should able to use screening and diagnostic strategies to develop diagnosis and they must be able to prescribe medications to enable them to work as independent practitioners (Competencies for Nurse Practitioners, 2012). In order to meet these competencies, the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation (2008) requires three separate graduate-level courses in advanced physiology and pathophysiology, health assessment and pharmacology as well as appropriate clinical experiences across the age
This is a personal statement for my application to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration in the Ball State School of Nursing. My personal statement provides details on my personal background and the unique impact that Family Nurse Practitioners have had on my life. I describe my undergraduate studies and how I firsthand gained interest as well as insight on the skills of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I go into detail about my aspiration to be a Family Nurse Practitioner to directly affect the patient care of a variety of patient populations. The personal statement connects qualities of my current practice as a Registered Nurse to the proficiencies of a Family Nurse Practitioner. I describe my learning habits and how the plan of study that Ball State offers coincides with my current work life. I conclude by describing the skills I attain and connect those skills to the Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration at Ball State.

I notify the MD and the nurse practitioner immediately if I find abnormal findings or values. I ensure to chart the education and the correction in response of the abnormal findings. In addition to that, tests and labs should be done to rule out problems. It is essential to know the patient’s health history before conducting the physical exam.
Texas is home to nearly 10,000 nurse practitioners. Nurse practitioners (NPs) in Texas do not have as many freedoms as NP 's in many other states. In fact, Texas falls at the lower end of the spectrum regarding the freedoms it offers nurse practitioners. House Bill 1885 would grant full practice authority in Texas to all advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), including nurse practitioners (NPs). It would authorize APRNs to evaluate and diagnose patients; order and interpret diagnostic tests; and initiate and manage treatments; prescribing of medications, these are currently job descriptions of APRNs and NPs that they are already doing, however, it would move these items under the exclusive licensure authority of the Texas Board of Nursing.
