The main goal of this research is to explain and to evaluate in the light of Walter Benjamin’s philosophy the significance of the fashion industry not only in terms of material and economic progression, but most especially the significance of the abstract phenomenon of fashion. When it comes to this industry, there is a standard notion that it is always related to capitalism and materialism. Nonetheless, in this project, the researcher will highlight that fashion also has immaterial significance. Immaterial pertains to an internal factor that contributes to cultural and self-reflection, plus social and moral emancipation. The framework of this paper will show the gradual shift from the material to the immaterial significance of fashion.
However technology today has allowed for a progression in the fashion industry. Three dimensional printing and digital printing has replaced many hand techniques allowing for more inventive and faster production of clothing in particular the retail industry. Fast fashion has made it harder for designers to have originality in the fashion industry therefore the industry is becoming more competitive. These factors have impacted the fashion industry over the years. Throughout my essay I will explore the factors in which impact the fashion industry and whether or not this was a natural progression over time.

The style in clothing of the previous centuries are visible at the current fashion trends. This fact is supported by James Laver’s theory. He is a respected fashion historian, who presented a timeline of style. Based on his study, fashion trends are indeed cyclical. Laver’s law envisioned this process through a list of adjectives identifying the experience of style that is evident in the ‘fashion cycle’, the process of introduction, adoption, and decline of individual instances of what is considered ‘fashionable’.

It has to be noted that it’s also instantly communicated to the world. Ultimately, all the history and the changes in society have changed the concept of what a trend is. A trend it’s not just a way of dressing, is not just something material. It’s more profound than that. Like fashion, its collective thinking, feeling and expressing.

Fashion refers to any style or practice that gains popularity among the masses, Most commonly this term is used with reference to style of dressing, the latest looks , accessories and even acceptable mannerisms. Body Image is a complicated aspect of the self concept that concerns the individual’s perception and feelings about their body and physical appearance,(Cash & Pruzinky, 2002).This paper is an attempt to understand how Fashion promotes the image of ideal women and its consequences on the women of today. Globalization has brought about drastic changes in the business arena. The increased interaction among different cultures has helped the Fashion Industry to grow and flourish.
