History of fast food
Fast food outlets have been existed since ancient Europe. Many people cannot afford to have a kitchen and this becomes the main reason they buy their food in fast food outlets or vendors (History of fast food, 2017). Twentieth century change the perception of fast food. The first company that change the culture and perception of fast food was McDonald’s, followed by KFC, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway and KFC.

According to Chen, et. al., (2009), in Metro Manila there are thirty-two thousand fast food restaurants. Some of the most common fast food chains are Pizza Hut, Jollibee, McDonald’s, KFC, Domino, Burger King and Subway.
According to Consumer, 2017 “25% of consumers eat out at fast food restaurants at least once a week, a contrast to a year ago with only 14%”. The prevalence of the Filipinos who eat out at fast food restaurants is one proof that fast food consumers is really increasing and increasing. This then leads to the question what is in fast food that makes the people come and go. What are the foods being served in fast food chains.
Intense change in lifestyle condition affects every individual. Affects not only the cultural and the daily living but also the nutritional state of the Western populations which leads to the increasing appearance of diseases (Cordain, et.al, 2005). Western diet is composed of high amounts of refined and processed foods, alcohol, salt, red meats, sodas, and snacks which contributes to the development of many diseases including heart disease such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, and obesity (Medical Dictionary, 2017). I believe that Micheal Pollan has described the bad habbits that the typical Americans do in majority of the time by mistaking fast foods with the whole healthy foods because lack of time or lifestyle. In the Michael Pollans argument about the "Western Diet" he informs that the majority of the American population about the western diet and believes that they need to get away from it, but it's for their own better health that many of us sometimes forget or don't even pay attention to it. There's many factors that the reasons Americans should get away from it is only to avoid the harmful chemicals we eat from a plain cheeseburger or fries and that effects our metabolism to get worse associated with it as the "western diseases" (page 433) Micheal Pollan has said.
Why the Fries Taste Good Eric Schlosser Fast food chains are a huge contribution to the obesity epidemic not only in America but in other countries as well. Schlosser just like many health reporters depicts the successful but unhealthy ways fast food leader, McDonalds has been able in keeping its customers wanting more. Schlosser emphasizes the additional additives in key foods such as French Fries that appeal to the consumers which is the seven different types of cooking oil, (20,Schlosser.) Schlosser uses the french fries as an example to show that in our everyday foods, they are additional additives such as “natural” or “artificial” ingredients.
Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser discusses how the American nation has been shaped and changed by fast food. The author takes something that is so American, fast food, and portrays to the reader the impact it has really had on American life and its culture. The author talks to multiple people who feel the negative impacts of the fast food industry and then goes more in depth about it. He relates life today to different time periods, such as the 1920s, great depression, and the industrial revolution. This book shows the read that in fact, history does repeat itself.
Fast food restaurants are also pulling people in to go eat there for example Wendy’s and McDonald’s offer salads with fruits and nuts in it but people think that the salad is fresh. So instead of going to the market to get the food people choose fast food. People have to work but instead of packing their lunch they find getting fast food is more convenient for them to buy food there. In the book Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser discusses the harsh truth that comes with the fast food industry. Schlosser covers much about the start of the fast food industry and how these companies have managed to change cultures all around the world. Over the last three decades, fast food has infiltrated every nook and cranny of American society. (pg 3). This is a minimal amount of time, when you think about it, for something this large to happen and influence so much.
The high demand for medical care also increases the financial burden on the families and therefore the community as well. As one can see the community health is greatly effected by the high rates of obesity among its individuals. Children in particular have a massive effect because not only are they the future of that community, but they also influence the schools in that region. Healthy People 2020 regard obesity in America as a very serious problem especially among children.
