Police brutality must be stopped so that police do not forget who they are serving not themselves, but the public. This means that even the criminals, who are a part of the public, have certain rights, particularly, civil rights. Police brutality causes a major concern in America. These racial prejudices are
The Washington Post has said, “As of Sunday, 1502 people have been shot and killed by on-duty police officers since Jan.1.2015. Of them, 732 were white and 381 were black(and 382 were of another unknown race).” This is a lot of people killed in this, but this shows how its very diverse and just isn’t one race being targeted. In the book Police Brutality, written by Sheila Fitzgerald, Officers are interviewed and are asked on their opinion on racial profiling. Their responses were, “ If you're stopped, they said, it’s because you fit a description or you’ve done something to raise an officer’s suspicion, such as hitch up your waistband in a way that suggests a hidden gun”(Fitzgerald 66). Officers only act on suspicion and not race.
More often than not concealed handguns have a negative effect on society than positive. When the concealed handguns get in the wrong hands it can contribute to an accident. For example, in Helen, Georgia a drunk man sat on the bench attempting to shoot his hand. The bullet went through his hand and struck an old lady who was walking with her family across the street. The shooter who was later identify as Glenn Patrick was charged for involuntary manslaughter and was put in jail for one year along with fines and probation.
For example, in A Red Record, Wells shows the records of 1894 and how 132 people were executed under United States law while 197 people were lynched and killed due to mobs without being able to defend themselves. Ida B. used lynching statistics of the time to show the sheer number of people who were lynched and just how common the problem was. These statistics showed how
He was eventually caught and received a death sentence. Cvltnation.com 9 The Happy Face Killer Keith Hunter Jesperson is the most twisted type of serial killer out there. Murder wasn’t enough for Jesperson; he also wanted to be infamous for his killings and left bold notes for the police and media about his crimes. These were often signed with a smiley face symbol which led to his alias as The Happy Face Killer. In a five year period between 1990 and 1995 Jesperson murdered eight women, mostly by strangulation.
Police brutality is also a big problem in America. Police brutality is the act of a police officer attacking an innocent person. Many times, the officers don't even get in trouble. In Alabama in 2017, 39% of the people killed by police were black. In contrast, blacks only made up 26% of the states population.
Also, overcriminalizing certain behaviors are set in order to deter certain offences within this community. More arrest are being made in order to stop drug offenses. The law enforcer mentality is, giving harsher sentences to a specific behavior, it will make offenders think twice when planning on doing the same behavior. This is an offences that law enforcers have made, in order to deter the war on drugs. However, it is provoking the overrepresentation of Hispanics in the Criminal Justice
Why do cops kill for no reason? In the month between May and June more than 4 people in every state was getting killed by a cop (Dilascio) .Police Brutality is excessive force or use of a weapon against a civilian. This issue is important to society because people need to know the law and how it works. Congress passed a law that really does not hold any weight it’s called “police misconduct” but this isn’t hitting the main point of Police Brutality. Police Brutality is wrong because people lose their lives or get beat and harmed from a simple arrest.
These numbers need to change. What is police brutality? According to S. Danilina, police brutality is the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. (1) In a recent case that took place in Louisiana, Alton Sterling was a 37 year old black male, who was shot and killed outside of a convenient store by two officers. A nearby bystander took a video footage and it shows the officers in action apprehending Sterling, you can hear Sterling being tased twice while the officers yell “get to the ground, get to the ground”.
Although we hope our Police force will use their powers for good, but sometimes police misconduct can occur. Often, the police are under great pressure to act as quick as possible, espcially in a murder case and if the murder victime is white, a child, police officer, or prominent. For example, In the 1990’s the case of Rodney King, that not only shows a racist issue within the criminal justice system, but also the issue with abuse from police officers, but changed the country’s views on the LA police force. Twenty- Seven years ago,Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers. King was intoxicated while driving and the police had caught him speeding, and initally he tried running away from the police, only to be followed by multiple police and a helicopter.
Some would argue that the police are doing their job and using the skills they have learned. The ones they are using however, are over the top and resulting in injury or death of the people they are arresting. In a “study—which gathered data voluntarily reported to the FBI from 2011–2012, tracked by race (excluding Latinos)— found that 70 departments from Connecticut to California arrest Blacks at a rate 10 times more than people of other races” (Catalan, DiversityInc). In addition, they are using these harsh tactics on primarily African Americans, who most of the time are getting stopped for a traffic violation and end up being hurt or killed. In this case, many officers are abusing their powers, shooting people, and claiming it was an act of self
On August 9, 2014 18-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot by police officer Darren Wilson. Crowds soon formed as the word of what happened travel across the world. This is like the shot her around the world in the American Civil War. With racial tension in America already at a high point, this event was a breaking point. Thinking back to the Civil Rights movement that went on for fifteen years this tragic event can be compared to that.
Most of the time in the cases it 's been one officer who violates the suspects rights, but in others there have been multiple officers. One case that was found was about the civil rights of Earl Faison in New Jersey, whose rights were deprived from him. Five Orange, New Jersey officers conspired to violate the civil rights of Earl and were found guilty (Boyd). This shows that more than one officer can be involved in depriving someone of their civil rights. During this time, in April, Earl died one hour after a false arrest for the murder of Officer Joyce Carnegie (Boyd).
As the democratic view adheres to the nation’s longstanding history of immigration, the Republican party does not believe immigrants should be granted the same rights as any american citizen. They believe that these illegal immigrants bring with them drugs and crime as well as take jobs that should be held by US citizens, calling for their mass deportation. With crime at its lowest in the last 25 years, both the democratic party and republican party seek to further this societal improvement. To them, the best method of controlling crime is to administer tougher punishments for those who commit violent crimes as well as leaving the death penalty as an option for the most heinous offences. The Democratic party believes we must also increase the number of cops on the streets, while Republicans wish to limit the amount of freed prisoners.
Based on data collected by the FBI, crime rates have gone down but the number of police shootings have increased. Most of the time when the police fire their guns, it’s because the suspects have ran away. This proves that this is mostly about police hostility. Many people only notice the police shootings when a black man is killed because they look at it as a racial problem. The killings of black men stick out way more
