People have many dreams, goals, hopes and wishes that they want to accomplish. They choose their own paths and create their own solutions to obstacles along their way. The quote, “People are not in control of their own fate/destiny,” is a false statement and is a negative outlook on life. Every single thing that one does leads to their destiny. When people accomplish their goals in life by doing such things can help get to your destiny. This quote is not true and people are in control of their own fate or destiny. The way people choose their dreams and follow it show that people are …show more content…
Destiny is determined by one’s own decisions. In the book, Santiago decides to travel to the Egyptian Pyramids. He does all he can to get up to his current dream. “ ‘What is it you’re looking for?’ … ‘I’ve already told you, I need to buy my sheep back, so I have to earn the money to do so.’...’ ‘I owned this shop for thirty years, I know everything about crystals...if we serve tea in crystal, the shop is going to expand. And then I’ll have to change my way of life.’ ” (pg. 59) The conversation Santiago had with the crystal merchant emphasizes that if you change what you do with your life hobby then you will have to change your life. This decision you make will lead to your destiny. When the merchant said that if they serve tea in crystals, they have to change their actions, and change life for the better. People have the ability to change their way of life. They have the power to choose their path. Also, Santiago chose what he believed was correct for him. After the Gypsy interpreted his dreams, he thought he had to actually search for his dreams. He had to find his personal legend. “ ‘It’s a force that appears to be negative, but actually shows you how to realize your Personal Legend. It prepares your spirit and your will, because there is one great truth on this planet: whoever you are or whatever it is that you do, when you really want …show more content…
Sometimes, things may not come out as we want it to be. There may be some unexpected situations that get in the way. “... you are trying to realize your own personal legend, And you are at the point where you’re about to give it all up.” (pg. 25) Since Santiago feels like he can’t accomplish his dreams, he is in a place where it may seem like he can’t control his destiny. Also, when Santiago got robbed, it seemed as if he couldn’t control what was happening to him. He decided to give up for a while. However, this does not prove that you can’t control your destiny. It depends on how you act and change your problems to make your destiny come true. Santiago began to listen to Melchizedek and follow his heart. When Santiago got robbed, he worked at a crystal merchant’s shop. And after a while, he earned money to save up for sheep and money to travel to the pyramids. “ ‘ I’m leaving today, … I have the money to buy my sheep back… Will you give me your blessing?’ ‘You have helped me… I am proud of you. You bought a new feeling into my crystal shop.’ “ (pg. 63) This shows that Santiago handled his decisions quite well to lead him to his destiny. Even though things went wrong, he had to be the one to fix it, not other factors in life that you can’t control. Everything we do leads up to our destiny. We do control our
I personally believe that we have control of how are destiny will work for us. We can do the right things in life, or do the not so good things that sabotage the way our destiny is suppose to work out for us. In The Sports Gene, by David Epstein, Donald Thomas was led to his destiny by a bet from a current track member who did high jump. He then found out that he was naturally good at high jump, because of his giant achilles tendon. But in Macbeth, by Shakespeare, Macbeth sabotaged the way he was going to become king of Scotland.
Santiago relents and decides to buy some sheep and return to Spain with honor. At the last minute, he decides to forgo returning to Spain and continues his journey. This relates back to the Crystal merchant being a threshold guardian because this is the first time Santiago
He searches by himself and through many other people. As Santiago tries to figure out his fate, we're destiny, he goes through a lot of hardships including getting robbed. But he knows that in the end he will reach his fate and didn't need a little help getting
While at the Oasis of Al-Fayoum, the elder chieftain of the oasis tells Santiago the story of Joseph of Egypt. Joseph was enslaved for being a dreamer, but he persevered and managed to become an important counselor to the Pharaoh of Egypt. This Personal Legend could have suited Santiago because of his connection to the Soul of the World. The Soul of the World is a spiritual unity that binds all forms of nature together. Santiago knew he wanted to follow his dreams; it was helpful when he learned that “When you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it” because he knew he was now destined to complete his goal, and not somebody else’s (Coelho 64).
To add on, the Merchant said, “You dream about your sheep and the pyramids, but you're different from me, because you want to realize your dreams. ”(Coelho pg 12) The merchant was trying to teach Santiago that it's important for him to go for his dreams and he realizes that Santiago has the potential do something with his dream and to make his dream come true which is different than most people.
Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.
Santiago felt very pressured but he didn’t fear to die this time because he knew that the universe was going to help him. Santiago overcame the fear of dying and turned himself into the

Santiago then tells the alchemist: “My heart is a traitor. It doesn’t want me to go on.” The alchemist replied with a smart answer and said “That makes sense. Naturally, it’s afraid that, in pursuing your dream, you might lose everything you’ve won.” A fear of uncertainty is what Santiago is feeling and he worries he’ll lose everything he’s accomplished so far.
The decision was difficult as both options don’t provide him a steady choice. As being a shepherd does not promise him to be with the merchant daughter and for finding a treasure he need to give up his well settled life. But at the end he chose to find treasure as it allows him to purse his personal legend or dram of travelling throughout the world. He always considers his choice before taking a decision this can be seen through this conversation of Santiago with himself, “Here, I am between my flock and my treasure, the boy thought. He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have.
(Coelho 45 5, Coelho 46 4 9) When santiago losses his money he does not give up he learns and finds a man to help in exchange for food and in the end gets a job that he can do while learning the language of the locals, finding a way to egypt and developing his identity. This job allows him to make money and the strength to carry on in his journey. Later on in his journey he is faced even greater adversity and the same thing happens he is dejected and lost but picks himself up and preservers. “ “he is going to transform himself into the wind, just to demonstrate his powers. If he cant we humbly offer our lives for the honor of the tribe.”
This is illuminated when the Alchemist says, “‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure’” (141). This particular moment shows that even though Santiago has both the ability and the knowledge to achieve his dream, it is impossible to attain it if he fears even attempting to reach it. Consequently, this fear acts as his enemy and a barrier that stands in the way of the meaningful and happy life he is destined to accomplish. Furthermore, another one of his fears is the fear of losing what he believes he has already earned. ” He reminded himself that he had been a shepherd and that he could be a shepherd again.
You should always follow your dreams and you will find yourself and you will do what you are meant to do in life, even if while following your dream, it changes. When Santiago had his recurring dream, he decided he wanted to find out what it meant in his life. He was told to go on this long trip, which sounded ludicrous.
He thought it’s waste of time and money. Later in the novel, the man who beats Santiago does not believe his own dream, but when he describes his dream to Santiago, Santiago recognizes it as an omen telling him where to find the treasure (Coelho 167). Thus, it’s the person loss as he ignored dream. The importance of actual, sleeping dreams parallels the importance of personal, symbolic dreams as embodied by Personal Legends. Thus, dreams require backbreaking work and determination to sacrifice anything to make it come true.
Santiago is exploring the fact that he's been out of luck for a long time. However, instead of wishing for luck and waiting for it, he prepares himself for it. He says he would "rather be exact... [so]
