When we hear the word domestic violence, first thing will come up to our minds is the physical harm, as we start looking for the physical marks on the victim 's body. In a quantitative study that had been made in 10 countries in which 19% to 55% women reported that they suffered from both sexual and physical abuse by their partner 's(Ellsberg et al., 2008). Domestic violence has been around for many years. It is even mentioned in the bible, Judges 19. Unfortunately, it is still a prevalent issue that is on the rise. Dr. Miller (2009) mentions in his book, “The domestic violence movement, also referred to as the battered women’s movement, has a long history, although it picked up steam with the advent of the feminist movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1971, Erin Pizzey opened the first battered women’s shelter in Chiswick, England. The first shelters in the United States opened their doors in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; Pasadena, California; and Phoenix, Arizona, in 1972. Soon thereafter, a shelter opened in Boston, Massachusetts, and Casa Myrna Vasquez, also in Boston, opened its doors as the first shelter providing services primarily for Latinas. The first support group for battered lesbians began in Seattle in 1985. Awareness and services have increased exponentially over the past three decades, and as of September 2007, a total of 1,949 domestic violence programs were operational across the United States.”
When most people in Larimer County, and throughout Colorado, think of domestic violence, physical altercations between people who live together come to mind. There are a number of situations, however, which may be considered domestic violence in the state of Colorado. By understanding the state’s laws on this type of offense, it may help people to avoid situations that could result in them facing criminal charges.
“Yes, people pull the trigger but guns are the instrument of death. Gun control is necessary, and delay means more death and horror.” (Eliot Spitzer) People are mostly 50/50 about gun control laws. Gun violence is unnecessary ,there has been one to many mass-shootings. Columbine high school in 1999, Texas 1991, California 2015. All these shooting all over the United States. Gun violence is generally the problem. Guns being misused, guns being used to hurt others or themselves. Gun control laws should be enforced because it will lead to less suicides, less money being spent on gun related accidents, and to protect women from domestic violence.

In addition, sexual violence is another form of domestic abuse. Sexual violence occurs when one forces a person to engage in a sexual act or compels sexual contact against his or her will. Sexual violence occurs in an intimate partner physically and emotionally abusive relationships where the victim agrees to have sex as a means to avoid additional abuse or intimidation. The topic my group chose is spousal homicide. In spousal homicide we cannot say how we can help the victim or try to solve their problem because the victim is already dead. A step before or what leads spousal homicide is domestic violence or spousal abuse. There for this next few paragraphs will be talking about what is domestic violence or spousal abuse, why spousal abuse happens, why the victims stay with their abuser and how we can help those victims from domestic violence/ spousal abuse.
An injunction for defense against domestic violence, also called a restraining order is a court document that orders the abuser to stop doing certain acts such as abusing you, contacting you or coming near you. It can also give you certain rights, such as, temporary custody of your children. If you have an injunction, and the abuser violates it, the police may arrest him or her for the violation.
Throughout, the years domestic violence was viewed as a family affair, and should only concern the family, but slowly laws have been passed to insure the safety of people that may fall victim. The United States followed after the European life-style of allowing men to beat their wife, and at the time referred as “men’s violence against their wife”. In the academic journal Legal Advocacy Against Domestic Violence by Barbara J. Hart she mentioned “In 1824 the Mississippi Supreme Court in Bradley v. State voiced approval of the husband's role as disciplinarian and stated its belief that the law should not disturb that role”(pg.3). As a result, numerous homes were open to domestic violence since it was viewed as a way to correct your wife of her wrong doings. Although, there was a solution at the time
Kill or Be Killed “I don't even know you and I'd kill you myself, you played with her like a doll and put her back on the shelf. Wouldn't let her go to school and better herself. She had a baby by yo ass and you ain't giving no help
Women ages 18 to 34 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence
Domestic violence is the leading cause of female injuries across the globe. Until recently, in many countries husbands used to legally “own” their wives’ bodies (Arthur 147). Domestic abuse is defined by Parmar as any incident of threatening behavior between adults who are or have been partners or families, regardless of gender or sexuality (674). The most common reason for domestic violence is partners wanting to retain dominance when they lack other resources, such as education and job prestige (Arthur 148). Although anyone can be affected by domestic violence, poor families are most likely to be affected (Carter 4).
Domestic violence has attracted much attention of the sociologists in India since the decades of 1980s. Violence affects the lives of millions of women, worldwide, in all socio- economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impending the right of women to participate fully in society. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all societies and classes. In earlier times, violence against women was a result of the prevalent atmosphere of ignorance and feudalism. Today violence against women is an uncontrollable phenomenon, which is a direct result of the rapid urbanization, industrialization and structural adjustment programs which are changing the socio-economic scenario of our country.
“The people who could do the most to improve the situation of so many victims being are in fact ourselves. It’s in our hand to stop domestic violence against each other” this statement was said by the famous actor Patrick Stewart. This statement is indeed correct. Domestic violence is an international problem which is everybody’s business even if one is not being abused. I strongly believe that there should be tougher law enforcement to protect against domestic violence. No one should experience or be exposed to domestic violence for it; affects family life’ increase the crime rate in countries, and it affects one’s body and mind.
