The play “The Crucible” By Arthur Miller, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts, where witch hunts and trials took place. Many were calumny of conjuring spirits even if they were innocent because of the hatred between each others in Salem Massachusetts. There are two main female characters that are fighting for one man’s dote. They are Elizabeth Proctor, and Abigail Williams. These two women have several similarities and many differences in their personalities. Elizabeth Proctor is John proctor’s wife. She is deeply in love with John Proctor and would go against her creed for him.…show more content…
She is Parris’s one and only niece. She is a very dishonest young lady. She is involved in several actions that are against her religion. A few example of this is when she was dancing in the forest, lying in court and she threatened others that if they say the truth about witchcraft then she will kill them and torture them. She was the one who began the entire witchcraft because she wanted Elizabeth killed and John Proctor all to herself. She had affairs with John Proctor and loved him, but unfortunately for her he did not feel the same about her and we can see this through their conversation “Abigail: Give me a word John…. Abigail, in tears: I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart….” (22). Abigail Williams is very manipulative and because of this many innocent people were calumny and sentenced to death. It is very clear that Abigail is very vindictive as we can see clearly that she took revenge on Elizabeth for firing her. This is the reason that she said that Elizabeth was also part of the witchcraft even though we know that this wasn’t true. Abigail Williams fights for what she can’t have. She fought for John's love throughout the play just because she couldn’t have him. This proves that she never gave up and always achieves whatever she
