She accuses all of the wives in the village basically, she also shouts names of random people and says that they are capable of witchcraft. Need I remind you that these are innocent women that she is putting all of the blame on, but for what? To save herself, if she as innocent as she claims to be then there should be no need for cover ups. She also lied about Mary Warren being a bird that was apparently attacking her and the girls. She was a very manipulative girl throughout the whole trial, she accused many and lied about a lot.
And he told the judge that she is using the witch craft lie to get his wife killed so that she can be with him. Goody Proctor knows this but when she is brought into court to testify she says “no sir he did not turn from me”(Miller,194) to protect her husbands name. As proctor yells out to her ”Elizabeth tell the truth!… I have confessed it!”(Miller,194) All the conflicts in this book can all somehow be brought back to this one simple themes every single time. Lies and Deceit. It geos to show you how one small lie as little as we didn’t do it can blow up into a huge ordeal.
Who Is To Blame? Arthur Miller’s The Crucible takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the Salem witch trials. Arthur Miller shows how Abigail was the main cause of the all the killing of innocent people of Salem. Her flaws was that she was quick to temper, she was jealous of Elizabeth, and that’s she lust for John Proctor. During the 1600s, young girls in a village located in Massachusetts began accusing women for performing witchcraft. The result of these accusations led to hysteria and the hanging of many people throughout the village. The playwright, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, and the novel, Witch Child, by Celia Rees, have both fictionalized the Salem Witch Trials. In The Crucible, the antagonist Abigail Williams is the source of conflict. She falsely accuses several village people of performing witchcraft, which resulted from her jealousy of her lover’s wife.
Abigail Williams is the main character of the play and acts with an utter selfishness and obsession. Abigail Williams is the catalyst to the witch hunt and is relentless in her plans to have Elizabeth Proctor killed, destroying the lives of many just because in her head that would mean John will want to be with her. She is obsessive and seems to lack
Abigail believed that Proctor actually loved her and she waited every night for him. She was brainwashed to think he would leave his wife for her. The witchcraft accusation came from the beginning of the story when Abigail and the girls were dancing naked in the woods and chanting. She made false accusations that people in the village were worshipping the devil to cover what she had done. Many lives were taken but Abigail had no empathy for anyone who was hanged.
The crucible, written by Arthur Miller, takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Several girls are discovered dancing in the forest and are accused of witchcraft. Reverend Hale, the “spiritual doctor” is called to Salem and a witch hunt ensues. Knowing that the girls would be punished for what they did, they claim they were possessed by spirits and turn the tables by accusing other people. Abigail Williams has had a hatred for Elizabeth Proctor because she is with her lover, and that is to blame for Abigail conjuring spirits in the first place.
When a woman is accused of being a witch and her life is in danger in 1600’s Salem, MA what recourse does she have to protect herself? Women of the time had no authority; they were seen as property of the men they married or were born to. Arthur Miller’s The Crucible takes place during the famous Salem witch trials. It all starts when young Abigail Williams has an affair with John Proctor and practices witchcraft in an attempt to kill John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth. When Abigail is accused of witchcraft, she confesses and in order to take blame off of herself, she accuses many others as well.
The witch trials started when Abigail and the girls started accusing the other women in Salem, Sarah Good, Rebecca Nurse, and Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail’s main goal was to have Elizabeth dead at her feet. She was so drunk from the power she acquired and her love for John, that she didn’t think her plans through. One by one, the people accused were sentenced to hang. Due to her mistakes, even her beloved John Proctor was now sentenced to be hanged.
The Indictment this is what you could say the Salem witch trials were all about and this is how Abigail got people found guilty and excommunicated from the church. She scared all of her friends to lie and it almost made them seem subservient to her. She was the first accuser and accused Tituba and after that everything went downhill. The judges seemed like they had a lot of predilection towards her and did not want to listen to the people that were accused unless they admitted to witchcraft. An example of this is Tituba confessed so she was not hanged but she accused many people too just so she could save herself.
