Feminism, as a contentious topic, has a long history, which is nothing new for modern people. Since the first enlightenment in the late 16 century, many women fought for their right, broke cultural bias and social regulation, and established NOW( National Organization for Women ) to struggle for gender equality. Females’ worthwhile endeavors have lasted for almost 4 centuries and it may continue in the future in order to ensure that each woman in the world can achieve basic rights and gender equality. Many people believe that feminism is a thing of the past and we don’t need it anymore because some countries have achieved the gender equality in some extent and females have the right to vote. So, why is the feminist movement still prevailing …show more content…
Females suffer from discrimination concerning many aspects, including few opportunities to receive education, the bias and restrictions due to culture and customs, the high rate of infanticides on girls, and the responsibility for rape cases.
First and foremost, girls are usually unable to receive enough education, especially in some poor and isolated regions, they are even not allowed to go to school. In India and some special regions, children as young as six years old are forced to get married by their parents or family. These girls don’t have the opportunity to receive education and have to spend their lifetime being controlled by their so-called husbands. Girls who refuse to marry are frequently beaten, imprisoned or

For example, Female genital mutilation in India. “Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.”(World Health Organization) Women who undergo the procedure are put at massive risk of infection and infertility, as well as the extreme pain that comes from the surgery without anesthetic. But, why do people do it and why they’ve remained this tradition for centuries? The answer lies in ancient attitudes toward female sexuality. In some parts of the world, a high value is placed on a bride’s virginity. FGM destroys the victim’s ability to derive pleasure from sex while also making it highly-painful, ensuring that virginity remains intact. “An estimated 100 million to 140 million girls and women worldwide have undergone this miserable treatment and more than 3 million girls are at risk for cutting each year on the African continent alone.”(Feldman-Jacobs, Clifton) On the other hand, From secular society’s point of view, females should devote themselves to family, which makes them more isolated from the real world. Because of the so-called responsibility to family, many females have to give up their job and restrict themselves to their family. Worse more, when some females devote their whole life
Amelia Earhart Feminism is a huge problem in the world that still is existent to this day. Whether it’s from insulting someone and calling them a girl or comparing one’s skills at something to a girl’s skill at that thing. Many people have taken a stand against this problem. Because of those people it isn’t as bad as it was back in the 18 – 1900s. Amelia Earhart is a perfect example of someone who has taken a stand against feminism.
It is for the reasons listed above that feminism is in fact still relevant, and should continue to be fought
Many young girls in poor and developing countries are forced to marry so their families are able to eat (Doki). “More than one-third of all girls are married in 42 countries, according to the U.N. Population Fund, referring to females under the age of 18” (Doki). Many young women are abused and murdered because of the lack of protection (McDonald). How can such an appalling problem take place in our world today, and how can we stop it? Thanks to authors such as Hurston, problems like these can be brought to light, but is it enough?
Domestic violence has attracted much attention of the sociologists in India since the decades of 1980s. Violence affects the lives of millions of women, worldwide, in all socio- economic and educational classes. It cuts across cultural and religious barriers, impending the right of women to participate fully in society. Domestic violence occurs in all cultures; people of all societies and classes. In earlier times, violence against women was a result of the prevalent atmosphere of ignorance and feudalism.
A middle ground is defiantly possible for this situation. I do believe that overall FGM is immoral and completely wrong, but it is a little different when it comes to culture. The short page says, “Members of both cultures were horrified when they learned of the other’s apparently barbaric way of treating their dead,” after the comparison of how the Greeks and the Callatian Indians manage their dead. I think that this can also relate to the topic of FGM because in our western world this topic is absurd, but to them it is something they have rendered since the beginning of
To initiate, the implementation of gender equality laws will help conclude unequal treatment towards women and create opportunities for women to refuse unsafe work and treatments. Also, without the right to make individual choices for body, women 's prosperity, well-being, and potential in society are restricted and gender inequality is therefore perpetuated. According to the academic article, Sexual Health’s Women’s Rights, “120 million girls worldwide have experienced forced intercourse” (Ngcuka) activities against their own individual soul. Many women are suffering from forced physical and sexual violence because of the limited laws and regulations that allow women to refuse unsafe treatments and practices. According to reports, the “ 32
Vasquez 1 The Women’s Movement "I raise up my voice—not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard...we cannot succeed when half of us are held back" (Yousafzai, 1). It takes a tremendous amount of courage to be able to live in this world as a woman, let alone a woman who wants things to change because a woman’s silence will not protect her. Throughout society today, the idea of feminism stirs up many different types of emotions and views of exactly what feminism is. A lot of people think that women's rights have already been accomplished.
In this article, we will be discussing how feminism is still needed as there is a lack of gender equality. Till this day there are still women that are not given the opportunity to be educated like men, females’ salaries are less than males’ salaries and women are treated as if their job is to serve men. Women and men should have equal rights because no one is more superior to the other gender. Sexism is still a struggle in our society that has to be tackled as it makes us as women feel unworthy and not capable of things that we can actually do. We are all human beings therefore we all have the same abilities as well as we all have goals we want to achieve but it is a struggle for women more than it is for men.
The few personal stories from the women who experienced circumcision offer powerful additions to the horrifying nature of genital mutilation and how the poorly done operation forever ruins the women’s hygiene and health. The result of Soraya Mire’s choice to only showcase the graphic parts of female circumcision takes away the cultural meaning and importance of the practice. Soraya Mire’s strong opinion on female circumcision relates closely with the Western approach to viewing external cultures and disagreeing with practices that
Indeed human rights have failed to achieve its goals in many countries around the globe due to economical and political diversities. According to Himalayan Foundation, 20,000 Nepali girls are enslaved. The recent Rohingya refugee crisis and genocide by Burma has questioned human rights defenders. WHO reports say that around 125 million girls and women were victimized of Female Genital Mutilation in 29 countries in Africa, Middle East and Asia. Surprisingly more than 2000 victims of FGM have received treatment at London Hospitals in last three years, reported by Martin Bentham in ‘London Evening Standard’, 2013.
This is something that concerns every girl and women around regions, nations, and countries. In Mexico, excessive murders, disappearance, and rape have been tremendous problems for ten years and still going (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 5). In South Asia, dowry death murders thousands of women each year, and honor killings continue to rise drastically in many Mediterranean and Gulf countries (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 8). Honor killings caused 500 women to die each year, 47% were raped then killed, and around 400 were beaten and/or tortured (The Facts: Gender Inequality and Violence Against Women and Girls Around the World, Paragraph 9-11). This is also reasons why physical and sexual abuse among females is increasing by the second all around the world.
Informative Speech: Female Genital Mutilation Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about female genital mutilation and where the controversy of it all lies. Central Idea: Female Genital Mutilation is a tradition in certain parts of the world. Most of the time these procedures aren 't carried out safely and the final outcome of the girls that have been mutilated are to work as sex slaves. INTRODUCTION (Attention Getter)This is Kizibianca of kenya, africa. At a mere fifteen years old she was woken up at 5 am and led outside of her hut by the the local traditional brothers and female elders.
Introduction In India, discriminatory attitude towards men and women have existed for generations and thus it affect the lives of both genders. Although the constitution of India has granted men and women equal rights, but gender gap still remains. Female discrimination violates human rights. These are mostly seen in family land sharing among sisters and brothers.
(Malkin, 2005) Women mostly have unequal access to health services and education, face glass ceiling at work place. Social customs that force or encourage girls into early child bearing and teenage marriages have dangerous and direct consequences for their health. There are much high levels of brutality and violence against women almost in all nations around the world. This could be among their families where it is treated a normal custom.
Article 14 of the Constitution of India stipulates that “the state not deny to any person equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws within the territory of India. Protection prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion race, caste, sex or place of birth.” Therefore this law should imply that all Indian women have and can practice the same rights as men. However these laws, while legally set in stone, are not socially acknowledged much of the time.
