Historians still debate, after 500 years of Ferdinand Magellan’s death, whether his title of the first man to circumnavigate the world should to belong to someone else. Magellan and his slave is a hard and cloudy topic to cover as there is so little evidence coming directly from the possible navigators; nothing is known beyond what Antonio Pigafetta wrote of Magellan and Enrique of Malacca on the day of the massacre, May 1st of 1521. With this, it is hard to come up with an answer, but also difficult to give Magellan full credit. He was born with passion and ambition in Sabrosa of Portugal in the year 1480 yet sailed under the Spanish flag due to better offerings and sponsorships than his homeland. He has received full access to quality education, attending a navigation school titled The Queen Leonora’s School of Pages, and studied routes, maps, astronomy and so forth (“Ferdinand Magellan Biography”). As a student who witnessed Columbus’ success upon the Americas and Vasco de Gama’s completion of Indian voyage, Magellan was inspired to achieve his goal of one day sailing across the entire world and so, put in more effort into his studies (“Ferdinand Magellan History”). The Magellan expedition was done in technicality rather than direct action. His knowledge upon the sea did not necessarily complete the excursion but rather, developed Spain’s image and reputation upon exploration. He has managed to travel in two different directions which lead to his widespread view on various cultures, visiting Morocco, Southeast Asia, and South America. Yet, he failed to reach back to his original point of departure, caused by the Malaccan war that eventually brought the explorer to his death (“Ferdinand Magellan History”). Though he has put in time and effort into trying to discover the Spice Islands, he passed away in the middle of his journey leaving many sailors confused of what to do. History may credit Ferdinand Magellan for his input of education and time, yet the title of the first Circumnavigator should be given to his Malaysian companion, Enrique. As proven by sources that it was the slave’s accomplishment, the Portuguese Navigator should be known for the seafaring understanding he has contributed to Spanish prosperity, rather than as the first man to sail around the
