This paper is a brief analysis of James Cameron’s Avatar, a very successful 2009 science fiction film. Avatar takes place in the virtual world of Pandora, created by James Cameron with digital technology and colonized with fantastic creatures and an indigenous race of 10 feet tall, yellow eyed, blue striped aliens called the “Na’vi”. With Avatar, Cameron has delivered a fast-paced fantasy adventure that weaves together a stream of powerful themes that are so important to our modern world that they extend far beyond the world of fictional film. The film itself, can be seen as a political film about war, the effects of violence, a social commentary about environmentalism, even speciesism. This could also be seen simply as a film about what it …show more content…
The humans have abandoned a dying Earth and invaded this planet of the Na’vi. Pandora has mineral and deposits that the human race wants for profit. Scientist develop these "Avatars" which look like the "Na 'vi" and have drivers, whose consciousness is projected into them. The plot follows Jake sully, a former marine who is in a wheelchair. Avatar opens with Jake’s dream of flying so synonymous with freedom, then the metaphorical belly of the whale, sees the start of the hero’s journey. We see scenes of loss as Jake hears the poignant news of his brother’s death, another blow to Jake’s already depleted sense of self with the loss of his legs. Because of this, Jake is a very disillusioned and bitter person, but still a warrior at heart. In the movie he states, “All I ever wanted was a single thing worth fighting for”. Even though he finds it in the most unexpected place, the heart of Neytiri, it was so ironic that at some point he would have to choose sides and literally fight in a battle between the human and the Na’vi that decided the fate for the entire …show more content…
Whereas, the Na’vi are people who live really in touch with their community, they are all a part of the natural habitat and lived harmoniously and in a utopia. Pandora is a beautiful community where people live to survive and learn from their surroundings, not to dominate. Jake, even though he technically still has the mind of a human but the body of a Na’vi, falls in love with a blue alien by the name of Neytiri. By doing so, he “sees” the person behind the blue skin, he sees her values and heart, and falls in love with that. The same goes for Neytiri who “sees” beyond his human flesh and sees the courageous and fearless warrior that Jake truly is. Cameron shows a deep message with this film. By falling in love with Neytiri, Jake’s true humanity only occurs when he is in his Avatar dream where he is allowed to be himself. When he is awake as a human he is pressured by the military, and is seen as only ‘meals on wheels’ yet used for a selfish good. When he is a Na’vi, he manages to get in touch with his deepest emotions and his true feelings, and see what life is really about and how good life can

Introduction 13th is Avan DuVernary’s documentary produced in 2016 which explores intersection of justice, race and mass incarceration in the United States. It is named after slavery was prohibited and the slaves freed through the thirteenth Amendment of the United States constitution which was resolved by the house of the representative and the senate in the Congress assembly. The amendment stated that, “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for a crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdictions.” The video starts by showing an African man imprisoned and others being arrested for imprisonment by the police. It shows how racism
A universally recognized pattern of symbol in literature is known as an archetype. In the 2009 film Avatar by writer/producer/director James Cameron, there are some very prominent archetypes. Avatar is about a soldier named Jake on the distant planet Pandora. Using genetic engineering, scientists created clones of the natives and neurologically connected them to Jake, so when he goes into a machine, he changes so he controls the Avatar’s body. His goal is to gain the natives trust and make them let humans take the precious metal, but once Jake learns of their culture, he joins their side and they fight against the humans.
Watching The Trouble with Evan was very difficult. There were so many things this family could have done to make things better, but every time they tried they just kept falling into their own ways. Insecure disorganized attachment was quite apparent between him and both of his parents. His parents had the tendency to verbally abuse him quite a bit, yelling things that most people would never imagine yelling at their child. Other times it seemed the mother would be frightened of Evan and his behavior.
Nature is a tempting escape from reality, but presents obstacles even for the best-equipped adventurers, like Robyn Davidson. It also challenges a pretentious individual, Chris McCandless (also known as Alexander Supertramp), who has a complete disregard for nature and its true power. The story Tracks tells the journey of Robyn Davidson, who partook in a nine-month journey across the deserts of Western Australia to the Indian Ocean. Unlike Chris McCandless who traveled solo, she was accompanied by her dog Diggity and four camels that she tamed herself to help carry the heavy supplies to aid her expedition. The vast isolation of the desert is exactly what attracted Davidson to it, just like the Alaskan Wilderness called to McCandless.
When you watch a movie do you ever think about what's truly happening as you observe with glazed eyes? In the movie Avatar the native people of Pandora are described as savages living in the mud. However, theses people had their own beliefs and a tribal system with a chief and an oracle leading the tribe. This can also be said about the natives of Mesoamerica when the Conquistadors came in droves in order to obtain gold, glory, and god in the New World. Because of this the humans in the futuristic movie Avatar and the humans of antiquity can be compared by factors of economic, societal.
The film “Argo”, directed by Ben Affleck, re-enacted the events of the Canadian Caper during the Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979-1981) in Tehran, Iran. Not all 53 hostages were captured as six American diplomats escaped and were taken into the care of Ken Taylor, the Canadian Prime Minister at the time, in the Canadian embassy. Taylor and the Canadian government created a plan to help the diplomats escape, however, they needed an intelligence force to back them up, which they didn’t have. The C.I.A was contacted to help Canada get the diplomats back to Canada safely with fake Canadian passports. The C.I.A created the fake movie called “Argo” as well as a fake studio and script.
Imagine a community with no color, no feelings, no choices, no love. In that community there is one boy with all of those things. Jonas sees the world, emotionless, blank. He wants to change it. The community chose Jonas to be the Receiver.
One of the factors that define Inception are the conflicts that appear in the film. A major conflict is the battle between Cobb and society. In Inception, faceless corporations are trying to kill Cobb, while the U.S. government is trying to imprison him because of a crime that he didn’t commit. These are examples of the “person against society” conflict, which can be considered as a characteristic of science-fiction. On the other hand, there is another significant conflict; the struggle between Cobb and himself, because of the belief that Mal’s suicide was his fault.

Throughout life we are told to express our individuality and swim against the stream of the general population to put emphasis on the characteristics that make us, in short, individuals. Cherishing what makes an individual special and different is what establishes roots in creativity and self expression, however there is a forced false sense of comradery in today’s society that takes the form of involvement with the masses; peer pressure forces many people to fall into the mold of an average character. The Academy award winning film, “The Incredibles” displays the themes of expressing one’s true self and special qualities, and in contrast repression by society to fit a basic mold. These themes are elaborated on through the development of the main characters and expressed further through the supporting roles and their dialogue and endeavors.
Science fiction has become increasingly popular over the past few years as new innovative technology has made it possible for films to become more realistic. Avatar, being one of the highest ranked sci-fi films to be made, is a clear example of how the film industry is on a fast moving track towards a new era of science fiction storytelling. James Cameron’s Avatar exercised all new forms of cinematographic tools in order to bring one’s imagination to real life. The first step after writing the script was to cast actors to each specific role.

The Revenant is a splendid and inspiring story that does not give a minute to withdraw eyes while the film is playing. This movie presents drastically new meaning to man-versus-nature drama, to a greater extent, because of the brilliant acting performance of Leonardo DiCaprio. The Revenant was directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu who, after the majestic success of Birdman in 2014 found an inspiration in the less civilized area, specifically, North America of the 1820s. The shooting took place in rough, freezing conditions and, what is more, most productions shoot for twelve hours a day minimum. Iñárritu and director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki were forced to shoot in a more fractured manner due to the creative choices made, notably shooting
