He later hears three gunshots and states, “where there are gunshots there is men, and where there are men there's food.” Rainsford follows where he heard the gunshots, he finds a huge house. He walks in and find two people named Zaroff, and Ivan. They provided Rainsford with food and a place to sleep. Rainsford is later giving a choice to get hunted or torchered by Ivan. Rainsford chose to get hunted and was given supplies that he would need. Rainsford has to make it through three days without getting killed and he survives all three days. Richard Connell’s characters in the story follow the actions that were based off Charles Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest. Even though they were written by different authors, the characters in the stories have some things in common, but at the same time they also have their differences, as well as the plot. A similarity is both characters had deep hate for one another. In “The Interlopers”, Ulrich von Gradwitz hates Georg Znaeym because Georg is hunting on his land, but Georg hates Ulrich because he claims that the land is his.

He is scared of dying but overcame his fear by facing the danger of the hunting game.

"I wanted the ideal animal to hunt," explained the general. "So I said, `What are the attributes of an ideal quarry? ' And the answer was, of course, `It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason."
