Over 31 cities have seen the fastest, the most incredible athletes in the world breaking records. Over these past two years I have played soccer, basketball and track and field and I know that doing any type of sport requires a lot of dedication and determination to reach a dream or a goal and these Olympic athletes definitely have it.
The first Olympic Games were in around 776 BC in Greece. The main purpose at that time was to value the beliefs of the Greek society as well as to honor Zeus. The official modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens; this event featured 280 participants from 13 nations competing in only 13 events. The United States has the most athletes with 555, followed by Brazil who has 469 athletes. The most expected events in these games are Track and Field, Swimming, Soccer, and Gymnastics is also growing in popularity. Over 2488 medal are given out, 812 gold 812 silver and 864 bronze. Something really interesting that I learned while doing this research was that the United States gives out money to any athlete who earns a gold medal in the Olympics $ 25,000 exactly while Singapore gives the athlete $757,000 in US dollars that’s the most any other country gives to an athlete. As of Monday the US still holds the commanding lead in the medal count with 69 medals in total 26 gold, 21silver and 22 bronze. Some of the strangest facts about the Olympics are that the youngest Olympian ever was a 7 year old French boy whose name was never recorded because as he was waiting to receive his medal be became bored and wandered off. The olympics are athletic games that first started in Greece. These games were later revived and are now seen as massive global athletic events that bring the world together and are held every four years. The olympics between 1892 to 2002 brought together cultures due to bringing together nations regardless of wars while simultaneously divided nation’s teams because of countries enforcing their own political agendas onto their athletes, such as Nazi Germany making their athletes prove how Nazism is better than democracy. According to Rodden, The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to not let Germany compete in the previous two Olympic Games for kindling the start of World War 1. In the early 1930s, the IOC decided to let Germany’s Weimar Republic hold the 1936 Games as a “welcome back to sports Germany.” This all took place before Hitler gained control of Germany and created the Nazi party.
The Nineteenth Olympic Games were held in Mexico City in 1968. On the 16th of October 1968 the 200 meters Men’s track event was coming to a dramatic end. Tommie smith finished the race in first position, with a world record time of 19.38 seconds and the second position and finishing with a national record Peter Norman from Australia with a time of 20.06 seconds. Soon to come third place was American John Carlos with a time of 20.10 seconds. Not only did these men change sporting history but perhaps more they also changed human rights history.
The Olympics was an international athletic event. In 1996 the Olympics was hosted in Atlanta, Georgia. This benefited Georgia economically, and it brought many people and lots of tourism. When there is more tourism then there are more people and when there is more people then there is more money which means the economy is greatly benefitted by people. It was widely thought that Hitler and the Nazis would use this event as propaganda. “Jesse entered the 1936 Olympics, which were held in Nazi Germany amidst the belief by Hitler that the Games would support his belief that the German ‘Aryan’ people were the dominant race” (“Biography”). Despite this knowledge, the United States chose to participate in the Olympics. One of the most famous athletes of the Olympics was Jesse Owens.
Some important events that helped sports become known were the Olympic games that were from April 20 to September 12. The momentum these sports built in the 1920’s endured in the popularity to the present day. Sports really help raise a lot of money to build the new stadium that we have today. The olympics games were stopped because of World War I but after it ended the olympics started up again and were more known to people before.
For instance, sports like golf, tennis, cricket, fox hunting and horse racing was played mostly by wealthy people. Sports in the 20th century were played mostly by people with economic power that produced sport to the working classes with a smart way of succeeding in their business. Because sports at that time defined as a non-work activity this helped the sport to increase its fame to many people who wanted to get involved with it. This way of producing sport was adopted by many factory owners who wanted their workers to entertain and to be obstructed with something so they can be happy to work for lots of hours. However, in the first modern Olympics in 1896, women could not compete but after four years in the Olympics of Paris, women started to compete in only a few sports.

Most basketball teams in America today are made up of the descendants of African migrants. This has changed the whole culture of the whole country because before, well known sports like these used to be only played by Europeans and Americans. In America, African migrants have much better physical capabilities. Because of this, many of them have been invited to represent America in the Olympics. By representing America, people look up to them, instead of just seeing them as migrants.
