How to Improve your Mental Fitness
Have you ever heard of the phrase "use it or lose it?" When it comes to mental fitness this is just about as true as it gets. Yet within society in general there seems to be a feeling of inevitability, a sense that over time we're simply going to lose our mental acuity. So, how can we “turn the tide” so to speak, with our own efforts?
It's inconceivable why this train of thought should be so ingrained. We don't believe that there is such a black or white answer when it comes to physical fitness, do we? Quite the contrary, we know that if we spend time at the gym doing either strength training, cardio workouts or a combination of both that we can expect to be a lot "fitter" going forward. Let's add mental fitness to physical fitness with the same expectation, as we use it or lose it.

It's very important to avoid monotony and routine as this can invariably lead to a sense of resignation and a lack of motivation. People who remain active are invariably one step forward when it comes to peak mental fitness. Wherever possible surround yourself with people who are active in both mind and body and with whom you can engage in various pursuits and pastimes.
Consider moving to or living in a community that's dedicated to pursing active lifestyles. If at all possible try and live in an area with a favorable climate, so that you can get out and about as often as possible and engage in some outdoor sports such as hiking, free climbing or swimming. By committing ourselves to improving our mental fitness at the same time as we improve our physical fitness we can sustain truly intense levels of activity and make a real difference in life, both for ourselves and for those around us. The old saying, “An apple a day will keep the Doctor away,” may pertain to more than just ones body. Just like an apple is healthy for ones body, using ones mind is healthy for the overall well-being of oneself and everyone else around. An individual has the choice on what to “feed” their mind just like they have the decision on what to feed their body. Benjamin Franklin did not fail to utilize his mind wisely during the eighteenth century. Franklin used his mind to contribute and innovate to others and the things around him because for many, an underused mind and an overused knife are the same — dull.
Mental strength is more important than physical prowess because a person needs to be able to strategize or fight for something rather than to actually be fit and physically able to do something. I believe this because you have to be willing to train and make sacrifices in order to improve in the physical area of sports. In “Confessions of a Doper” the author explains on page 90 how he used drugs to achieve “that last 2 percent” that he needed to become an elite athlete. However, the other 98% was achieved by mental strength. In order to conquer that 98%, he spent all his time training and mentally preparing for his race. I know what you are thinking, isn’t training preparing physically?
The long-term behavioral goal that I wish to focus on for this assignment is to do physical exercise five-days a week. Regular physical exercise would help me maintain a healthy weight, reduce my risk of heart attack and stroke, improve my mood and well-being, and is an important factor for a long and healthy life. The first technique that I practiced was time management. I have a busy schedule which involves a constant balance of attending classes, doing homework, going to work, doing church callings, and participating in extracurricular activities.
Fitness has been apart of my life for as long as I remember, with a large range of various activities. When I was only two years old, my mom signed me up for gymnastics at the gym named Salto. I view the gym as a very reliable place to work out, but I also believe gym’s are boring and provide a disadvantage for athlete because the athletes do not become accustomed to the heat or the cold.
