Hofstede has suggested five cultural dimensions. As we know Hofstede has suggested five dimensions of culture and they are, the individualism-collectivism, the uncertainty avoidance, the power distance (strength of social hierarchy), masculinity-femininity and the time orientation (short term vs. long term) (Research methods, n.d.). These dimensions explain the way people are connected and conduct their behaviors in the society. Come up with another, different from any of Hofstede’s, and explain it in detail. Besides the five dimension of culture created by the Dutch anthropologist Geert Hofstede, there is another dimension of culture known as Indulgence versus Restraint. This culture dimension was, in 2010 included in the previous five created by Hofstede. Indulgence versus Restraint is based on Bulgarian sociologist Minkov’s label. There are numerous examples of different cultures at each extreme. Power distance extreme: In low power distance culture, the first example of an extreme would be when a new employee refers or addresses the chief executive officer (CEO) as “my friend” or “my guy”. Another extreme is when a male secretary demand to have dinner with his female boss (head of the department). In high power distance culture, an example is when an office manager compels his employees to do his laundry. Another example is to compel employees to work into the late hours without compensations. In Individualistic culture, an extreme would be when someone deliberately denies giving assistance to another person in danger. Another example is when an individual suppresses others to accomplish a goal (achievement by default). In a collectivist culture, an example of extreme is when a person vests all decision-making to the group or community.
