BACKGROUND OF FLORICULTURE INDUSTRY IN SRI LANKA
Sri Lanka’s export-oriented floriculture industry was established during 1980/81.The industry consists of 40 companies including few foreign investors. Floriculture sector employees over 5000 people and more than 1000 families in semi urban and rural area are indirectly involve in exports as out growers to the existing companies. This is one of the few agriculture based industry that employee people throughout the year and date of 5-7 worker per acres.
Economic Contribution of Floriculture industry in Sri Lanka

The exports have slightly recovered during the year 2011.Climetic variation and diverse topography of Sri Lanka enable to formers to cultivate range of product from tropical to temperate.
Sri Lanka export sort a growth of 3% from 2006 to 2010. Sri Lanka ranked at 52 in 2010 hold market share of 0.1 % in the total world experts.

The availability of cultivation technology to finish product according to international standard to also available with large produce and exporters.
Sri Lanka skilled labor for this industry has an advantage og having coopeete as growing media.
SRI LANKAN FLORICULTURE PRODUCTS
There has been an application of good agriculture practices to protect the environment safeguard workers and sustainable use of natural resource in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan product assortments consist of ornament, plic plante cut decorative leaves, cut flowers, aquarium plant,land scapping plant, tissue cultural plants.

More than 90% of cut flower exports are temperate flora, including variants like Carnations, Roses, Chrysanthemums, Lilies, and Gerberas.
Tropical flowers include exotic species such as Anthuriums, Orchids, Heliconias and Ginger which are exported in small quantities. Imported Anthurium variations are sourced from the world 's best Anthurium breeders, Anthura bv. Netherlands, and cultivated for being exported to top global breeders.
Aquarium Plants
The tropical aquarium plants used in aquariums are cultivated for export under the strict supervision of trained nurserymen with years of experience. The assortment includes varieties such as Cryptocoryne, Echinodorus, Anubias, Lagenandra, Aponogeton etc. Tropical aquarium plants are cultivated under strict supervision of trained and experienced nurserymen.
Landscaping Plants
Hardy tropical trees more than 3ft in height, flowering bushes, shrubs, climbers, plants for hedges & ground covers used for landscaping purposes are produced for export.
